Doggone 'New Moon' werewolves

Not being particularly invested in the Twilight Saga, it's taken me a few days to catch this film blog from the Guardian's Ben Child about New Moon's underwhelming werewolves.  Child rightly points out that "werewolves on celluloid have something of a history, and it's a proud one" (see The Wolfman, An American Werewolf in London).

But instead of taking the opportunity to live up to the tradition, and show off the vampire vs. werewolf plotline isn't just a bunch of pretty faces engaged
in a girlfight, New Moon has copped out with a "flash of pixels" transformation.
Says Child:

The young men simply vanish, and are replaced by their animal counterparts: as a feat of special effects engineering, it's right up there with some of Dr Who's worst moments, and this from a film with a reported $50m budget.
Snap!  Child definitely calls it like it is, but is it really surprising?

The Transformation is seamless and painless what is not to like about that? Unlike those suffering bastards who have been transformed for real. I’m told the process takes 13 days on the quaint New English Isle of Montauk. It is a combined science of nano-bots and genetic splicing. A secret Government Laboratory located deep underground beneath the Montauk point lighthouse, run by an extremely detached branch of our military. Their objective is to create the perfect ground soldier, with fierce animal instincts and no fear the finished product will resemble the werewolf. In July of 2008 one of their early attempts escaped and eventually washed up on shore, although this early version was still more beast then man, initial civilian examination was stumped. The Media took hold of the story and created a diversion while the undercover lab officials switched the body with that of a raccoon. While everybody was listening to the “Montauk Monster” stories spoon fed to us from the lab via their media outlets, a Mister Charles Haddensmith (whose whereabouts are now unknown) was trying to reveal the truth. I have personally seen the evidence he collected along with the “real photos of the monster”, unfortunately all of his work disappeared with him. The last update I have received from this modern day Island of Dr Moreau is that the transformation process is still to hard on the human body, most of the soldiers don’t survive and those who do are so completely insane, they are not any use. So people as you sit and have our coffee in the mornings oblivious as to what is going on around you, just stop and take a moment of silence for a great Heroes like Charlie Haddensmith and the hundreds of other nameless faceless Men and Women who put their very lives on the line to bring you the truth! I am running out of time at this location, I will bring you more life changing information next time.
