The newest installment in the "Paranormal Activity" franchise hit theaters on Friday, January 3 and it looked as if they might take the top spot for the weekend. "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" obtained impressive numbers for its opening but it just couldn't hold up against Disney's "Frozen." Despite the buzz, it was marked for the number two spot.

Produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider, the film that only cost $5 million to make, went on to earn a respectable $18.2 million this weekend. Reviews are mixed but tend toward favorable. IGN stated,"If you enjoy the 'Paranormal Activity' series, 'The Marked Ones' works. Stronger than the low point of 'Paranormal Activity 4' (though not up to the heights of PA3), 'The Marked Ones' benefits from opening up the series considerably." ComicBookResources.com says that it does "effectively deliver scares" but there's not much suspense.

Over at Dread Central, Steve Barton sums the film up by saying, "This is the 'Paranormal Activity' movie you have been waiting for. It makes up for the lame fourth entry in every conceivable way. It's nothing short of an absolute gift to the passionate fans of this storied franchise. 'The Marked Ones' proves without a shadow of a doubt that 'Paranormal Activity' is back in top form... with a wicked and evil vengeance."
