Live action Beauty and the Beast in the works

Remaking animated fairy tales into live action movies is nothing new. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they do extremely well at the box office. The tales we know and love dearly have incredibly dark roots and thus can be translated better when using live actors versus animation that will mainly draw the kiddos.

The success of such films as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz: The Great and Powerful has prompted Disney to try its hand at taking one of its most beloved animated films and giving it new life.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) was full of supernatural goodness, and Deadline has reported that the tale -- as old as time about a spell-bound, shape-shifting Prince who is cured by love -- is slated to be penned by screenwriter, Joe Ahearne. Disney has titled it, The Beast and it will most likely explore the darker side of the story as well as be available in 3D.

According to Deadline, producers will include David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman, and Disney’s LouAnne Brickhouse will "steer the project." Disney is eager to get this project done, but Guillermo del Toro has already been tapped to direct a similar film for Warner Bros. with Harry Potter’s Emma Watson to star.

Unfortunately, del Toro is super busy with other projects and may need to be replaced in order to expedite production. It isn’t like Disney doesn’t already have two other fairy tale-based films coming out. Maleficent (the evil queen from Sleeping Beauty), starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning; and, Cinderella are in the works and should be out in 2014.

So which Beast would you prefer to see? The Disney or the del Toro version? No doubt, they would be two very unique creations. Let us know what you think! Come on, be our guest!
