According to Variety, Peter Weir (Master and Commander, The Truman Show) will direct the film adaptation of Jennifer Egan's 2006 book "set in a mysterious medieval castle somewhere in Central Europe."
Set to shoot next spring, the film is Weir's first since 2010's The Way Back and will have a relatively modest budget of $30 million through Paris-based SBS Productions. Says Variety, The Keep "turns on two estranged American cousins who reunite to set up an alternative resort, stirring childhood traumas and phobias in a haunted castle."
The Australian-born Weir is one of those directors who doesn't work very often, but when he does, the result is always a memorable character study of unique individuals. So the thought of him applying those talents to a spooky movie is promising indeed.
