Is Paul Rudd going to be Marvel's next superhero? The 44-year-old comedian and one of the stars of the just-released, "Anchorman 2" is reportedly close to signing on as Ant-Man in the Edgar Wright-directed and co-written film. Variety is reporting that Marvel had no comment on the casting but that he's in negotiations for the role.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name was rumored to be up for this role but the actor denied it. Besides, he's too busy producing and potentially directing and starring in a movie adaptation of Vertigo Comics’ “Sandman” comic series. But is an "Ant-Man" role completely off the picnic table?

According to Variety, "In the comics, the character’s alter-ego is Henry Pym, a brilliant scientist who invented a substance that allowed him to change his size and communicate with insects. One scenario that was rumored when Wright first came on is that he would focus on the later years of Ant-Man and add the character Scott Lang, a crook who steals Pym’s technology and becomes the new Ant-Man. This may hint at the idea that both Rudd and Gordon Levitt could potentially become involved in the film, although the idea seems unlikely."

Will Rudd make a good Ant-Man? He's mostly known for his comedic roles but so was Robert Downey Jr. and he made a kick ass Iron Man. We'll keep you posted on any new developments but it looks like a deal is imminent.

The film already has a release date of July 31, 2015.
