'Lost Girl' actresses open up about show's same-sex love triangle

The dark fantasy fae soap Lost Girl has become a fairy tale hit since Syfy imported the series from Canadian network Showcase. Beginning with its U.S. debut on Jan. 16, the show picked up about 1.5 million total viewer, and experienced a 14 percent growth the following week. But in addition to the impressive numbers the show has been pulling, Lost Girl is notable for how it handles the issue of same-sex relationships.

Currently airing its second season on Showcase, with a third season already ordered, the show follows succubus fairy Bo (Anna Silk) as she attempts to navigate the political world of the "Dark" and "Light" fae with her human best friend Kenzi (Ksenia Solo).


Spoilery alert thing But while fighting monsters, kicking ass and taking fae names, Bo also gets involved with the wolfshifter Dyson (Kris Holden-Reid) and human doctor Lauren (Zoie Palmer). The show never labels Bo's relationship with Lauren as gay, lesbian or bisexual, and simply just deals with it at face value. This is a relatively new development in genre TV (with the exception of HBO's True Blood).

More supernatural for Syfy with succubus 'Lost Girl' series

The succubus might be about to take a bite out of the vampire's pop culture territory. According to a press release, Syfy has acquired two seasons' worth of the popular Canadian drama Lost Girl from Prodigy Pictures.

Lost Girl focuses on "supernatural seductress" Bo (Anna Silk, The Ghost Whisperer), a succubus who feeds off sexual energy - and the show has already gained a loyal following.

Classically, succubi are thought to be demons in female form who have sex with men in their sleep. However, this interpretation makes the beings seem more like sexual vampires with an urge to feed.

"Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door -- until she 'drained' her first boyfriend to death," says the release. 

"Bo has since hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. She is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark or Light Fae clans. Bo decides to take the middle path between humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin, protecting humans along the way."

The first season of the hourlong Lost Girl has already aired on the Showcase channel in Canada, after premiering Sept. 2010. Filming of the second season has commenced. It was initially rumored The CW would acquire the show for United States viewers.
