Benedict Cumberbatch Officially Announced as "Doctor Strange"

With rumors swirling for some time now,  Marvel has officially announced Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead in "Doctor Strange." The "Sherlock" star was reportedly cast in the role back in October, however it was pure speculation at the time. According to the rumor-mill, Cumberbatch became a possibility for the role as far back as June, when talks with Joaquin Phoenix fell through.

In the official statement, Marvel studio head, Kevin Feige stated that "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity [...] In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."

The newest addition to the Marvel movie-verse will be directed by Scott Derrickson and penned by Jon Spaihts.

"Doctor Strange" is scheduled for release on November 4, 2016.

Sorry, Cumberpeople, but it appears that everyone's favorite otter-faced actor will not be joining any new franchises in the foreseeable future. During a panel at this year's Oz Comic Con, Benedict Cumberbatch sat down to set the record straight.

For quite some time now the Internet has been swirling with rumors that the "Sherlock" star would be joining the upcoming season of "Doctor Who" as the Master, while other fans speculated that he would someday be the next madman with a box. Considering Steven Moffat serves as showrunner to both popular BBC shows, it would make a bit of sense if a cross-over occurred. Unfortunately for those Wholocked fans out there, BennyBatch told audiences that "I'm never gonna play the Doctor-and nothing to do with the Whoniverse."

As for re-teaming with "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams for the upcoming "Star Wars" film? According to Australian entertainment site, The Iris, it's not happening- “I would've liked a part in JJ's new Star Wars but it won't happen, sadly."

Benedict Cumberbatch. When you hear his name, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Until recently, most people might think "Oh, that guy who looks like an otter?" Yes, that guy. However, the mere mention of him now sends fans into a swooning frenzy. The man who has been likened to an otter, and a hairless cat by my sister, is now one of the most lusted after men in recent history, but why? To explain the enigma of him, is not so easy.

For those who don't know much about him, Cumberbatch is the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. He attended boarding school from the age of 8, and made his debut on stage as Titania Queen of the Faeries in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream" at the age of 12. Until the premiere of "Sherlock" in 2010, the actor was unknown to American audiences. Once stateside viewers became enthralled with his snarky, quick-witted portrayal of Mr. Holmes, his star seemed to rise quickly.

Benedict Cumberbatch Visits 'Sesame Street'

Is it possible for Benedict Cumberbatch to be any cooler? We didn't think so but his appearance on "Sesame Street" just elevated his status a bit when he asked Count von Count for a little counting advice. Khan-ting advice? Sorry, just being a little Smaug there.

Murray Monster adorably refers to him as "Benedict Sherlock" and we think he should stick with this name. What are your favorite Cumberbatch roles? Or could you just close your eyes and listen to him speak all day no matter what role he plays?

'WHOLOCK' Crossover Video: 'Doctor Who' Meets 'Sherlock'

In anticipation of the "Doctor Who" Christmas special, "The Time of the Doctor," and the Third Series of "Sherlock," super fan John Smith made this extremely professional-looking crossover video featuring Matt Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Smith offers his description of the video on his YouTube page, "Months after an encounter with a mysterious 'Doctor', Sherlock becomes obsessed with discovering more about this impossible man... until the man makes an unexpected return."
