Teaser Trailer for Upcoming Stop-Motion Film, 'The Boxtrolls'

From the hands that brought us "ParaNorman" and "Coraline" comes a new 3D stop-motion, CG hybrid animated feature film from LAIKA and Focus Features. "The Boxtrolls" isn't due out until next September, but you can get excited about it now by checking out this new trailer. "The Boxtrolls" is based on Alan Snow’s bestselling fantasy adventure novel, "Here Be Monsters" and is directed by Anthony Stacchi ("Open Season") and Graham Annable ("Coraline" and "ParaNorman").

Voice actors include: Ben Kingsley; Toni Collette, Elle Fanning; Isaac Hempstead-Wright ("Bran Stark" from "Game of Thrones"); Jared Harris ("Mad Men"); Tracy Morgan ("30 Rock"); Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead"); Nick Frost ("The World’s End"); and, Richard Ayoade ("The IT Crowd").

'ParaNorman' combines horror, '80s elements in paranormal package for kids

Beginning with the opening scene - a valentine to cheesy, low-budget zombie flicks – and continuing throughout, ParaNorman establishes itself as a fun movie targeting kids from the minds of adults who love horror and the ’80s – and even somehow manages to give a nod to paranormal theories.

Co-directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away) and Chris Butler (who did story board work on Coraline and The Corpse Bride, and wrote the screenplay credit here), the 3D stop-motion animated comedy follows Norman Babcock (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), an 11 year-old horror-geek who sees ghosts in the Salem-esque witch-tourism town of Blithe Hollow. At home, Norman’s parents (Jeff Garlin, Leslie Mann) get flustered over their son’s belief in ghosts while, at school, he’s bully bait to Alvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

It is incredibly obvious to acknowledge the zombie invasion has been in full effect for a couple years now with the ghouls shambling into pop-culture’s top monster spot more each day. Aside from being the threat of AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead, they’ve taken a bite out of non-zombie franchises with guest spots. Not even their undead cousin, the vampire, can come close to being such a total immersion creature as to bleed over into reality with walks, runs, obstacle courses and, yes, actual hard news stories speculating whether they have come into existence courtesy bath salts and occasional cannibalism.

Zombies, man, they creep me out – but that might be about to change with a major evolutionary step signaled at San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks back: Zombies With Personalities. Even though it sounds like the name for a garage rock band, Zombies With Personalities (ZWP) are members of the monster horde with names, personalities, individual behaviors, etc. emerging in a big way within pop culture.

ParaNorman is an upcoming 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller adventure film set to be released on Aug. 17, 2012.

The movie is about a misunderstood local boy named Norman Babcock who has the unique ability to speak with the dead. Once he finds his hometown of Blithe Hollow under siege from a centuries old witch's curse, he'll have to take on ghosts, witches and zombies to save his home.

The paranormal has been present in American pop culture cinema for years, but its impact on the demographic of children viewers is often overlooked. To celebrate the long anticipated cinematic return of the Paranormal genre to children's films with ParaNorman, here is a list of the top paranormal kid's movies of all time.

New 'ParaNorman' trailer reveals more plote details

Our friends over at Screen Rant (via MSN), showed off the new ParaNorman trailer which offers a little more in the way of details and supporting characters. The 3-D stop-motion animated film by Laika Entertainment is a kid-friendly horror-comedy about a kid who talks with the dead and uses these talents to battle undead creatures and to break a curse that plagues his town.

Although the teaser which hit in October (set to the tune of Donovan's "Season of the Witch") was cooler and moodier, this trailer does tell us more about the film that Screen Rant reports is "an original film written and co-directed by onetime storyboard artist Chris Butler, in collaboration with co-helmer Sam Fell," who previously collaborated on Coraline and Corpse Bride.

ParaNorman hits theaters Aug. 17, 2012, and features the voices of Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), John Goodman (Monsters, Inc.), Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), Casey Affleck (Ocean’s Eleven), Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Elaine Stritch (30 Rock).

The first trailer for the animated adventure-comedy ParaNorman debuted on Yahoo Movies, and gives us a brief look at the plot of a monster-movie-loving kid who communicates with the dead, must protect his town from a curse. ParaNorman masterminds Chris Butler and Sam Fell previously worked on Henry Selick’s Coraline and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Although the teaser (successfully) leaves out any dialogue - and instead relies on Donovan's "Season of the Witch" - the August 2012 film will feature the vocal talents of Casey Affleck, Leslie Mann, John Goodman, Elaine Stritch, Anna Kendrick and Jeff Garlin.
