Prepare for 'May The 4th' aka 'Star Wars Day'
Forget about May Day or Cinco de Mayo because this Saturday is May the 4th! While a little known holiday to some, it is Star Wars Day to super cool savvy geeks everywhere.
Since it began on May 25, 1977, fans of Star Wars have used any and every excuse to celebrate their fandom ... and rightly so! Over the past few years, May the 4th has evolved into a fun way to participate in Star Wars-themed activities, crafts, recipes, drinks ... you name it!
But while the holiday is a punny play on ... y'know, we're not even going to explain that one ... it has its origins in a big historic moment: The election of Margaret Thatcher as Britain's first woman prime minister. When Thatcher, leader of the Conservative Party, won the election on May 4, 1979, her party took out a half-page ad in the London Evening News.
The message? "May The Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations."
May is also important to Star Wars fans because all six of the live-action films premiered in May. And this May 25 marks the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. Also, George Lucas's is May 14, 1944.
Officially, Lucasfilm has embraced Star Wars Day, and celebrates it at the official Star Wars blog, on Twitter with the hashtag #MayThe4thBeWithYou, and on Facebook.
Let us know what you'll be up to for Star Wars day. And in the meantime, check out this official May The 4th video.
