Marvel's 'Secret Wars' Officially Announced
Every part of the present Marvel business model will be on display this May with the release of Secret Wars. It's another event-driven plot that basically issues a relaunch of titles where hints of resurrected heroes come in to play. That covers the big three things, right? At a live announcement today, Editor-in-Chief, Axel Alonso, and Senior VP and Executive Editor, Tom Brevoort, officially unveiled plans for the MU-changing Secret Wars it has been teasing for months now.
Did you think all those teaser covers of past Marvel events were just gratuitous, tongue-in-cheek ways of paying homage to Marvel history? Well, they were, but they also served the purpose of giving fans a preview of each world that will be inhabiting Battleworld, even if they didn't realize it. Battleworld looks a lot like Earth. In fact, it is Earth, but after the conclusion of the Time Runs Out thread that's been playing out through Avengers and New Avengers for the past couple of years. Jonathan Hickman will continue the meta-plot he's been guiding in Avengers and New Avengers since their respective relaunches and help create an entirely new world for Marvel with Esad Ribic manning the pencils.
Josh Brolin Cast as Thanos in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'
Variety is reporting that their sources have confirmed Josh Brolin has been cast for the role of "Thanos" in Guardians of the Galaxy.
There has been much speculation regarding the galactic-scale super-villain ever since he appeared in the stinger for Marvel's Avengers. First, there was speculation that he was the main villain for Avengers 2 until it was announced that the plot for that movie would follow the storyline for Age of Ultron. Some also suspect that the item Star Lord (What, you haven't heard of him?) is trying to steal in the trailers for GotG is yet another Infinity Stone. Add to that, mentions of Infinity Stones (aka the Infinity Gems in the comics) and the Tesseract (aka the Cosmic Cube) as well as the actual visual of the Infinity Gauntlet in the first Thor movie. Did you blink and miss it?

Get To Know The 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Team
The comics it is based on debuted in 1969 (led by the character Yondu, to be played by Michael Rooker, aka Merle from "The Walking Dead"). That team existed in the 31st Century of a parallel Earth timeline (#691) but crossed over and inspired a modern team in the Earth 616 timelines, in a series launched in 2008. This is the team led by Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, featured in the new movie. Also some interesting tidbits is that Zoe Saldana's Gamora is supposedly the adopted daughter of Thanos (the big purple, Death-loving dude we saw in "The Avengers" stinger scene), and Karen Gillan's Nebula is possibly his granddaughter. Sooo that Thanos gets around, eh?
And lest we forget, billionaire playboy and Ol' Shellhead himself Tony Stark/Iron Man joined the Guardians comic book line-up in 2012 for a time. Remember when Tony flew into a galactic portal in "The Avengers"? Maybe it's time to think about how long exactly he was on the other side, and who he may have encountered whilst there. That might just be connective tissue to the Earth-based Avengers film franchise, which returns next year with "Age of Ultron."
Anyhow, if you'd like more info on the "Guardians" characters, our friends at Moviepilot have been kind enough to assemble the embiggenable infographic after the jump. Peruse and get your nerd on, and mark your calendar for Aug. 1, when "Guardians Of The Galaxy" invades theaters.

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Hits
Cap is back, but not all is well in the world of the First Avenger. The Sentinel of Liberty (Chris Evans) still finds himself a man out of time in present day Washington D.C., working with the super spy group SHIELD. But Cap is also haunted by his past, while also facing a government that doesn't always deserve his trust.
Following the events of "The Avengers," Cap is working alongside the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in the new adventures, but we also see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) -- along with Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Robert Redford playing a shadowy SHIELD leader Alexander Pierce and Sebastian Stan asBucky Barnes The Winter Soldier.
Interesting to note that the trailer begins with Stever Rogers in his new duds before he dons his old costume again (which confirms some previous rumors), and it looks as if he's as much fighting the establishment of SHIELD as much as other threats.

'Iron Man 3' has super weekend
reports, this weekend’s domestic opening of
Last summer’s blockbuster, The Avengers, another Marvel film, amassed $207.4 million in its opening weekend, putting Iron Man 3 in second place of all-time opening rankings. We have no doubt that the appeal of its star, Robert Downey, Jr., lends to the high numbers, as well as the broad audience a movie like this reaches. Reviews were mixed so we want to know what YOU thought about this third installment.

'Thor: The Dark World' gets electric
The thunder god from Odin returns in the first theatrical poster for Thor: The Dark World, the sequel to the 2011 film which introduced the Avenger.
The film, directed by Game of Thrones alum Alan Taylor, (he directed the kick-ass "Valar Morghulis" episode), will hit theaters November 2013, but a trailer will likely debut hitched to Iron Man 3 in May.
The film is part of the Marvel Phase Two adventures that will lead up to The Avengers 2 in 2015.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt already cast as Batman for 'Justice League'?

That is a bold statement, right? It makes some sense, based on the hint at the ending of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
This news comes on the heels of a New York Post interview with Man of Steel director Zack Snyder where he said he couldn't comment on the Superman movie being integrated into a larger superhero universe because "that would be a big spoiler." That sounds like a big "yes" as well. Snyder also said he was being trusted to keep the Justice League movie "on course" and that he didn't know how that movie could move forward without acknowledging his.
Now Nolan has been pretty adamant that TDKR closed his work with Batman, but he is connected to MOS. Also HitFix.com is stating that their sources are telling them that Warner Bros. is "solidifying deals" for Gordon-Levitt (and one other actor from the Nolan franchise) to do ... something earlier than JL.
The obvious guess here is that we'd be looking at a post-credits Man of Steel scene where Supes and Bats meet up. It was a strategy that worked perfectly with the Marvel Universe's build-up to The Avengers. Plus, Warner Bros. is unlikely to greenlight another JL tie-in after MOS and before the supergroup movie opens Summer 2015. So this would be the big chance for the studio to create buzz.
So what do you think? Do you want to see JGL in the JLA?

Joss Whedon weighs in on politics - and zombies
We try not to get too involved in political discourse over here at Paranormal Pop Culture. As long as you vote PPC and allow us to assume our natural role as galactic overlords, we're just peachy. But occasionally politics inserts itself into our world, such as with this new Joss Whedon video.
A citizen concerned with the health of our country - and concerned with a zombie apocalypse - The Avengers director warns/endorses Mitt Romney for president because the Republican nominee will speed along the undead's rise.
Is Whedon right? Will Romney bring about zombie ruin? Is Whedon's next project going to be an Abraham Lincoln horror movie called Log Cabin in the Woods?
Watch and see for yourself.

'Justice League' vs. 'Avengers 2' Summer 2015?
Courtesy Cartoon Network |
According to the L.A. Times, DC Comics' superheroes can have a cinematic team up after last week's legal victory "in its long-running fight over the rights to Superman." The studio is expected to accelerate development of a planned Justice League movie that would join Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and other characters, "according to a knowledgeable person not authorized to discuss the matter publicly."
Who do you think would win in and outside the box office? The Justice League may have an army consisting of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash and The Green Lantern ... but, the Avengers have a HULK! Which film are you most excited to see? Or do you think the more mighty heroes on screen in a summer, the merrier? We'll keep you posted on the news surrounding this epic battle!

'Battleship' dead in the water, doesn't stay afloat

It is fitting that the new alien invasion movie Battleship is based on a popular Hasbro game since it follows so many rules.
The “not living up to his potential” likable protagonist, outgunned soldiers, demolished cities, enormous explosions, fast-moving action sequences, montages and even AC/DC songs. The tropes in the Peter Berg-directed sci-fi effort are so familiar to Michael Bay's work that Battleship could just as easily be titled Transformers on the Water - starring robots with less personality.
'Avengers' vindicates geek community

So yeah, I loved The Avengers.
Let’s simmer on that word for a few: love. Love for a movie is a pretty significant emotion, and yet I stand by it. While not perfect (the gripes are ridiculously minor), the film was a pure joy. It delivered on the promise of a Marvel-ous adventure with Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and (finally) an awesome, Incredible Hulk.
But this isn’t a movie review.
Instead, it’s more of an “I told you so,” to Hollywood power brokers locked into the philosophy that audiences crave dark heroes and sober plot lines, and that the geeks who grew up loving the source material could not be trusted to make a blockbuster.
Nerd favorite writer and producer Joss Whedon assembled The Avengers, who stormed the box office last Friday. There was a sense by Sunday that everything had changed for superhero movies.
On Sunday night, Walt Disney Co., which owns the Marvel Comics characters, announced the new flick had debuted to $200.3 million (later updated to $207.4 million) – the largest all-time opening weekend for a movie (and yes, a sequel is coming). But for fanboys and comic geeks like me who had been tracking the super-group superhero movie, this was no big surprise.
OK, so it was a little bit of a surprise - a pleasant one - but we geeks had been waiting for this.
In fact, we’ve been debating, discussing and having fantasy casting sessions for the movie for years. Geeks have been so patient, waiting for a movie that could pit Earth's (and Asgard's) mightiest heroes against themselves before teaming them up to battle a common, villainous threat.

The big bad god: Tom Hiddleston brings mischief to 'The Avengers' as Loki
![]() |

Tom Hiddleston aims to misbehave. Unless you’ve been living under a rock in Asgard – or frozen in suspended animation – you know the English actor is reprising his role as villainous Loki in the biggest super hero flick ever, The Avengers.
Directed by Joss Whedon (who incidentally coined the “misbehave” line for Serenity), the new blockbuster pits four of the most iconic Marvel Comics heroes, along with help from three other well-known characters, against one god of mischief. Sure, Loki does get help from a few lackies, but in Hiddleston’s words, Avengers is a “solo villain” movie – and Hiddleston is more than ready to relish the fight.
So who is the man who can take on the superpowered supergroup of his half-brother Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Iron Man, as well as Nick Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye? Born in Westminster, England, the 31-year-old actor is known more for chewing scenery in theatrical productions and dramas than for chewing up (and spitting out?) comic book legends.
Still, after director and Shakespearean buff Kenneth Branagh hired him as fallen prince Loki in the 2011 sci-fi/fantasy flick Thor, Hiddleston showed he could transform a two-dimensional funny page antagonist into a believable, sympathetic and just plain menacing three-dimensional baddie. The Thor performance was enough to convince fanboy favorite Whedon – who also penned The Avengers – that Loki was enough to support an entire movie’s worth of conflict.
In a recent interview at the Disney offices in New York, Hiddleston spoke with Paranormal Pop Culture about the challenges of being the big bad in The Avengers, as well as the evolution of his character, his work with Whedon and the giant group hug that was the Hollywood superstar cast. And in case he ever does need a super-villain group, Hiddleston reveals who he’d assemble for his own legion of doom. (after the jump)
