'Oz' to get darker fantasy treatment in new show

While Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful looks like it's worth a screening when it arrives March 8, fans of the trippy world can also look forward to an upcoming darker-brick-road treatment.

According to Variety, a macabre, sci-fi version of the classic L. Frank Baum tale has been picked up by Warner Horizon Television. Red Brick Road will be produced by Mark Wolper (TV series Bates Motel), Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) and Roy Lee (The Ring), and despite the plot being very secretive, it is being touted as being an edgy sequel to The Wizard of Oz with a hint of violence and political intrigue a la Game of Thrones. The show’s creator, Rob Prior is a well-known concept artist for films and graphic novels.

Thanks to Collider.com we see that Prior’s show art depicts a red-cloaked Witch Assassin and a robot Tin Man. What do you think the others key characters might look like? A Zombie Cowardly Lion? A Vampire Scarecrow that drinks the blood of nuisance crows?

We’ll keep you posted on any casting or when this cool new series will be showing up in your living room.
