Paranormal TV: Time To Give Up The Ghost?

BY SHARON HILL

I recall watching MTV's "Fear" back in 2000 (or so) and thinking, "What easy TV drama! People just scare themselves and the viewers get drawn in!" Since the dawn of the modern paranormal encounter show 14 years ago, has anything really changed?

Nope, not really.

With Amy and Adam exiting "Ghost Hunters" we're left wondering if they can launch a new media venture significantly different than the parade of ghost investigation shows we've watched for the past 10 years. I'd be pleasantly surprised if that could be pulled off but I doubt it. Shows are packaged to be different but underneath, it's the same old lines, same old places and same tired ideas.

The attrition rate for ghost shows is high; "Ghost Hunters" is the standout exception in its 10th year. Many reality paranormal shows are long gone with "Ghost Hunters" remaining. Most of the original cast, however, is gone and the spinoffs have spun down. After losing so many of their key people, can the TAPS crew come up with something new? All the famous places have been "TAP-ped" already.

The ideas have run out so the embellishment and drama is amped up.

'Mountain Monsters' Get Personal Against Cherokee Death Cat

Season Two of Mountain Monsters continues Friday, June 6, on Destination America when the AIMS team (Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings) head to North Carolina on a hunt for the Cherokee Death Cat.

Oh, you don't know about the CDC? Apparently the brutal, farm-animal killing creature was borne from an old Cherokee Indian legend that says it was emerged from the Trail of Tears to exact revenge.

And AIMS has a personal connection with the best because team member Buck has Cherokee blood. According to Destination America, "after meeting with a series of eyewitnesses, the crew races to unravel the myth surrounding the Death Cat by constructing an elaborate trap with a retractable ceiling and setting a trail camera to prove once and for all the existence of this predator hell-bent on revenge."

What's more, a farmer apparently has photo evidence of the monster. Check out the clip and tell us what you think. Is it a mountain lion, a cougar, a jaguar... or a Cherokee Death Cat?

'Mountain Monsters' Renewed for Second Season

Courtesy: Destination America
Destination America’s new series Mountain Monsters has trapped themselves a second season thanks to record ratings. The public has spoken and proved that they can’t get enough of the elusive monsters and the charismatic cast.

Produced by American Chainsaws for Destination America, the series debuted on June 22, won the title as Best Original Series Debut for the network and from there on, each episode delivered consistently good ratings.

In a statement from Marc Etkind, general manager of Destination America, “Mountain Monsters has quickly become a breakout hit for Destination America, with each new episode continually redefining our peak ratings performance. From the mysterious beasts that have haunted America’s wilderness for generations to the native West Virginia sons of AIMS who embody rough-and-tumble backcountry life, Mountain Monsters resonates with viewers who are curious about our country’s local legends as well as the locals themselves.”

The finale featuring the Lizard Demon of Wood County, West Virginia, is described in the press release:

Having spent a lifetime with the mountain wilderness as their home, hobby, and hunting ground, the members of AIMS, led by its founder John “Trapper” Tice, expertly tap into their backwoods ingenuity using both traditional techniques and modern technology to capture the Lizard Demon. But to catch something so aggressive and amphibious – the likes of which make it their toughest assignment yet – the team must venture outside their comfort zone and into the murky waters of Appalachia.

The Mountain Monsters season one finale will air this Saturday, July 27 at 10 p.m. ET. on Destination America.

'Mountain Monsters' worth sinking claws into

Courtesy Destination America
Destination America has a fun monster series that we think is a good snack for your beastly hunger.

Called Mountain Monsters, it debuted Saturday, June 22, airs at 10 p.m., and follows a shaggy group of hunters and trappers -- known as The Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings (AIMS) -- as they investigate legendary and unidentified creatures in the Appalachians.

First, let’s meet this gang of native West Virginian sons of this Duck Dynasty meets Destination Truth team. The founder of AIMS is John “Trapper” Tice. He’s an older gentleman who sports a long beard like many of his cohorts. He’s a nice mix of no-nonsense and fun. He takes these woods seriously, as they all do, but will joke around when appropriate. He also doesn’t mind incorporating modern devices along with traditional trapping methods. Then we have Buck (the Rookie ... he has no beard); Huckleberry (who handles security); Wild Bill and Willy (trappers); and Jeff (he’s the researcher who needs a cool nickname and looks like Santa).
