lycanthropy
noun ly·can·thro·py \lī-ˈkan(t)-thrə-pē\
1: a delusion that one has become a wolf
2: the assumption of the form and characteristics of a wolf held to be possible by witchcraft or magic
Werewolves have permeated pop culture for centuries, including heavily influencing Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. In fact, the term lycanthropy was coined in the 16th century. According to BBC, next month for three days starting on September 3, an actual conference devoted to the lore and lure of the werewolf will take place at the University of Hertfordshire, thanks to organizers, The Company of Wolves.
Experts in the field will gather for lectures that include such topics as; Rabid Bitches and Fanged Whores, I'm Hairy on the Inside and Barebacking Werewolves in Rural America. Sign me up! Better yet? Conference attendees "will be able to walk with (real) wolves, eat Red Riding Hood biscuits and picnic beside the Berkhamsted churchyard where the 18th Century remains of 'Peter the Wildboy' lie."
The organizers take this subject very seriously and relay why this is an important event. According to Dr. Sam George, "People have been fascinated by human-to-wolf transformations down the years, especially in film. Many remember Lon Chaney in Wolf Man or the cult classic An American Werewolf in London, which brought werewolves to contemporary audiences. But how many people actually know the different ways that you can become a werewolf according to folklore or that there were actually werewolf trials in France and Germany where people were hanged and found guilty of lycanthropy? At the conference we want to draw attention to these little-known facts and discuss the werewolf in all its many manifestations and cultural meanings."

Paranormal History: The Importance of 'Preserving the Haunt'
It’s sometimes easy to forget a key element when it comes to the paranormal and that’s history. Ghosts, spirits, hauntings…whatever you label them as, all stem from a point in history whether recent or in the distant past. During the weekend of May 2-4, I had the honor of representing Paranormal Pop Culture at Para History Con 2 held at historic Fort William Henry in Lake George, NY. It was presented by Glory Haunt Hounds and the hard work and dedication of John Tobin and Cathy Chabot as well as countless volunteers.
I’ve recommended attending paranormal conferences in the past and this “Preserving the Haunt” event really drove home the importance of not only maintaining the integrity of some of our most treasured historical sites, but honoring the spirits that may still reside in them.

The Pros of Paranormal Cons
BY LARISSA MRYKALOI propose that the American Psychological Association should include a new diagnosis in its diagnostic manual: Post Paranormal Conference Blues (PPCB?). There's nothing like spending a weekend with friends and not only having fun but also learning something too. I just arrived home from Phenomacon 106 that took place in Gettysburg, PA and once again, I realize how fortunate I am to get to attend conferences and not only meet up with but speak to some truly interesting and genuine folks.
I asked my friend, Alli, to give me a quote about why she comes to paranormal conferences and her response mirrored the ones of those I just saw on the Phenomacon Facebook page. She said it was, "A great opportunity to connect and learn from other like-minded people." The range of guests goes from skeptics and scientists to psychics and healers. I went from speaking to Grady Mosby who is the author of "A Near Death Experience: I Died and Came Back from Hell" to discussing Bigfoot and the recent Rick Dyer hoax with Eric Altman, Director of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society. I attended paranormal researcher/psychic, Chris Fleming's panel on angels and left there much less skeptical and will definitely be keeping my eyes open. This was just on my first day.

Dragon*Con financially separates from co-founder, controversy
In a major move on the con scene, Dragon*Con organizers have announced they'd be changing the name of the company as part of a "cash-out merger."According to a Dragon*Con press release, the board of directors and shareholders of Dragon Con/ Ace, Inc. have agreed to rename the company as Dragon Con, Inc.
The move appears to occur to counter the controversy surrounding Edward Kramer, one of the six original founders of the Atlanta con, who had been accused of child molestation (charges which date back to 2000).
Kramer's continued financial involvement had led to fans (and celebrity guests) threatening boycott of the event, although organizers contended Kramer had not managed nor been in involved in Dragon*Con's organization since 2000. Dragon*Con, which reports more than 50,000 attendees, is known as a major cosplay convention and social event that attracts a large fan contingent and less involvement from networks or studios.
Led by other founders Pat Henry, David Cody and Robert Dennis, the effective date of the merger is July 8, 2013 -- which allows enough time for attendees to still make plans to go to the con (though getting a hotel room might be tricky). The proposed merger was previously reported on by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in March.
Said Henry in the press release, "This decision only affects the ownership of the old Dragon Con ... Our members and others who attend Dragon*Con 2013 will experience the same fantastic convention they have come to expect from us."
Additionally, the release stated the con will continue established agreements with each of its host and overflow hotels, as well as all of the guests and performers scheduled to appear.
