Werewolf Bites: 32 Things You Didn't Know About The Hairy Beasts

2014-01-15-TEENWOLFMTV2550x311.jpg

BY AARON SAGERS

Who's afraid of the big bad werewolf? The creatures of folklore and entertainment have struck us with full-moon fever for generations, and it seems like a new litter of movies or TV shows starring the supernatural pups is always popping up.

On TV, Syfy has a pack of two wolfy shows, such as Bitten and Lost Girl, but there is also MTV's Teen Wolf  -- as well as The CW's werewolf-ish Beauty And The Beast. Vampires may take center stage with CW's The Originals and The Vampire Diaries, but the wolves are a regular burden to the bloodsuckers. Although he's technically a "Blutbad" the hairy Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) on NBC's Grimm is definitely a wolfman. Supernatural also has an ongoing puppy love for them, as did the recently wrapped True Blood and Being Human, and the ongoing show Hemlock Grove. And director David Hayter's new movie Wolves even has Aquaman Jason Momoa wolfing out.

So with all the lupine lunacy out there, and just in time for Halloween, we wanted to serve up a giant serving of paranormal pop culture werewolf bites...

'Grimm' Recap: 'The Show Must Go On'

Opening Quote: “Under such conditions, whatever is evil in men’s natures comes to the front.”

The Grimm goes to a carnival. My first thought was of course, if Nick kills a clown, then this show will redeem itself. My next thought was if Creepy Baby kills anyone, I’ll be happy. Let’s see if any of these things happen, shall we?

The Carnival Metamorphosia has come to town, and they manage to kill someone in the first 30 seconds! Darn, it was just a carnie trick. Maxmillian the Werewolf, played by the wonderful Sam Witwer ("Being Human"), is alive and well and drinking himself blind. As he leaves his trailer, he inadvertently loses control of his transformation. He fights with his girlfriend and stumbles outside where he is accosted by two young groupies. He later finds himself getting his groove on with the girls at their place to the tune "Werewolves of London." They get a little more than they bargain for when they ask him to show him how he does his little carnival trick. He transforms into a full blown Blutbad and the girls fake thrill-seeking screams turn unfortunately real.

Are you my Mummy?

Opening Quote: “You shall not become corrupt, you shall not become putrid, you shall not become worms.”

We open this new episode of "Grimm" with some construction workers breaking down a brick wall in some miscellaneous building somewhere. Behind the wall, lies a secret chamber containing a crate that appears to have arrived in 1946. Given that some miscellaneous Egyptian type stuff is lying around, they call in an archaeologist. This person, I shall henceforth dub Bad Scientist Lady, happily has them open not only the crate, but the jackal-headed sarcophagus it contains as well. Let me say it again...she has them open an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus in some dirty room full of construction debris.

Wu Meets a Monster...

Opening Quote: “I am going off to a house and entering it like a snake...I will devour their babes and make their hearts ache.”

Meisner and Adalind are still cozily ensconced in their little cabin in the Swiss Alps. It would be terribly romantic if only Adalind wasn’t in the middle of birthing a demon child. Meisner performs this task admirably well. He’s a catch ladies; not only is he hot but he can deliver babies too. As soon as the bundle of horror is done throwing books around the room and is delivered into this unsuspecting world, Adalind goes full on Hexenbiest before collapsing in relief.

Opening Quote: “Still after a short time the family’s distress again worsened, and there was no relief anywhere in sight.”

When last we left Portland, Nick had inadvertently walked in on Monroe arguing with his parents. Recognizing him as a Grimm they momentarily forgot their anger over Monroe marrying a Fuchsbau to attack this more immediate threat to their way of life. Monroe faces them down, but it’s just one more wedge between them. The disappointment on his mother’s face when she learns he’s friend’s with a Grimm is a look we all know well. Her “I don’t even know who you are anymore” to her son as she leaves, breaks what’s left of poor Monroe’s strength for the night.

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “Come back in the evening, I’ll have the door locked to keep out the wild huntsman.”

Welcome to the Monrosalee hour. That is not a complaint by the way. I feel it’s pretty safe to say that Monroe is one of the major draws on "Grimm." His character is adorably nerdy and caring while still possessing the ability to deliver some pain to the bad guys. Perhaps his confidence is inherently due to his Blutbad nature; he certainly didn't seem afraid to meet Rosalee’s family last week.

As this episode gets underway however, he seems a bit nervous. He paces to and fro at the bottom of the stairs waiting for Rosalee to descend. When she does appear, she is stunning in a little black dress. They head out to a very expensive restaurant for a rare night out. Surprisingly though, the marriage proposal we are expecting doesn't happen. Instead they trade stories of their first time volking (transforming). By the time they get home Rosalee is tired and ready to get out of her tight little dress, when Monroe insists on showing her a cuckoo clock he’s been working on. He parks her in front of it and turns the clock hands to the hour. Out pops the little bird who asks her to marry him in it’s peepy little voice. Aww, Monroe is such a sweet little wolf boy. Rosalee accepts of course, and they spend the night holding hands in bed talking about the wedding. It does finally occur to them that they may have a problem with all of their Wesen friends at a wedding with a Grimm. Yes, that could be a problem.

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”

Well, that quote sounds a bit ominous doesn't it? This is a rather dark little Grimm tale, full of lies, old resentments, and legendary monsters. We begin with a young woman sitting in a car outside a VFW Outpost. She appears quite agitated and then begins cutting her arm with a very large knife. Meet Frankie, she’s a former soldier, she’s angry, and she’s played by Emily Rios ("Breaking Bad," "The Bridge"). She marches into the bar and confronts a man named Ron (Kirk Acevedo of "Fringe" and "The Walking Dead"). He definitely gives off the impression of not being happy to see her.

Opening Quote: “I am glad ‘tis night, you do not look on me, for I am much ashamed of my exchange.”

Gang violence has found the Grimm. Or rather he’s found himself in the middle of a gang fight. One side is definitely Wesen. Wouldn’t that kind of be a pack? Anyway, a really big Wesen who happens to be a high roller in the local gang gets beaten to death in the parking lot of a diner. The only witness is a young man who was there waiting for his girlfriend to get off work. Of course, as Jared flees, another customer takes one look at him and pegs him as the killer. Jared turns out to be the little brother of Zuri, Hank’s physical therapist. Yes, the same one that shot Hank down last week when he asked her out.

Paranormal Pop Culture: 2014 Winter TV Guide

BY LARISSA MRYKALO

The holidays are over and now we can resume watching not only our favorite TV programs but also get addicted to some new shows. From blood-suckers to aliens to ghosts, there's something for everyone to enjoy from the comfort of their couch.

Syfy is handing out the goodies with their new shows "Helix," Bitten," and "Opposite Worlds." The CW is starting off the new year with the return of "Arrow," new fan-fav, "The Originals," as well as introducing us to "The 100." Some shows are returning but don't yet have a premiere date locked down, for example, "Mountain Monsters" will be returning to Destination America in "early 2014" and we're eagerly awaiting a premiere date for "Game of Thrones." So here you go! A winter and early spring guide to new and old.

'Grimm' Recap: 'Red Menace'

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote:
To kill Koschei the Deathless, first you must find his soul, which is hidden in an egg, in a duck in a lead chest buried beneath an oak tree.

"Grimm" came back from winter break rockin’ out with a little ditty called “Lil’ Red Riding Hood” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Really, who doesn’t love that song? This plays as we watch a woman in a red pullover jogging through the woods. Suddenly, a big bad wolf in a black hoodie comes tearing up behind her. Don’t worry, it’s just Nick enjoying a morning run with his new super Grimm powers. It’s a nice a call back to the very first episode of the series though.

We also find that Juliette has a friend with an abusive husband. Alicia is leaving her husband and coming to stay with the Grimm family. She’ll be perfectly safe right? When she arrives, it doesn’t take long for Nick to figure out that she’s a Fuschbau like Rosalee. He neglects to tell Juliette though. I suppose it might be difficult to find out one of your best friends isn’t who you’ve always thought they were. Let’s hope the new and improved Juliette handles this without whining.

"Cold Blooded"

Opening Quote: “But for the pit confounders, let them go, and find as little mercy as they show!”

Do you remember that old urban legend about alligators living in the sewers, lying in wait for hapless city workers? Well, they’re real! At least in the world of "Grimm" they are. They are also prone to grand acts of larceny and they don’t mind brutally murdering any witnesses. Like real world alligators and crocodiles, their attacks often result in ripping off a limb or two by brute force. In other words, they aren’t nice.

Nick and Hank get called to the scene of one such crime. A young man has returned home for a visit with his parents. Unfortunately, a very large man is robbing the family home at the time. The young man dies and loses an arm in the process. The blood splatter on the ceiling was impressive. They start piecing together other robberies in the area that may be related and the hunt is on.

'Grimm' Recap: 'Stories We Tell Our Young'

Opening Quote:
We don’t believe, we only fear.

A nine-year-old boy is taken to a church for a good old fashioned exorcism. Needless to say, he goes all Damien on the elderly priest. Wu and crew are called to the scene and Hank and Nick follow. Poor little Daniel has been having fits of demonic rage for about a year now according to his father. Since the doctors haven’t been able to help, they allowed the priest to do it his way.

Capt. Renard heads off to Vienna to confront his own demons, otherwise known as the "Royal Family." This goes as expected, when some Wesen try to assassinate him in his safe house. He ends up escaping into a sewer. Can you imagine what that is going to do to his expensive shoes? In another part of the city, Adalind gets a mysterious call summoning her up to the big house. Guess she gets meets to meet another Prince now? She looks quite charmed to be sure.

Still trying to work out exactly what Daniel might be, Hank and Nick get a nice talk about Wesen ‘birds and bees” from Monroe and Rosalee. It includes some adorable hints about their possible offspring. As they smile adorably, Nick and Hank get a call that the seminary student that assisted the priest had woken from his trauma. He insists that the boy is a demon. The dynamic duo find this explanation more and more possible. As they head down the hall to see Daniel, the boy has one of his episodes and attacks a nurse, but quickly goes back to sleep.

Opening Quote:
Sleep child, sleep now… Or else the Bogeyman will come and eat you.

This week it appears that the Portland Police Department hasn’t been doing a very good job of protecting its citizens. A young gas station clerk, Andres, is brutally attacked during a robbery. His sobbing mother prays for justice over his comatose form in the hospital. In a motel across town, an angry Wesen is watching the news and learns of her son’s attack.

Before Nick can deal with this new issue, Juliette confronts him about the email from the last episode. She gets pretty pissy about it too. I suppose she might be slightly justified since she doesn't know Nick’s mother is alive. Since Juliette was in her sleeping beauty coma when Nick learned his mother was alive, she’s out of the loop. I hope Mama Burkhardt comes back soon. I need her to put the smack down on Juliette. Especially when she fancies herself a hacker and tracks down that Mama Burkhardt sent the email from an ip address in Slovenia.

'Grimm' Recap: 'One Night Stand'

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “More and more she grew to love human beings and wished that she could leave the sea and live among them.”

The setup: Young frat guys are lured to the water's edge by some hot girls. Drunken, very off-key singing ensues. I'm not saying the singing was so bad it was deserving of death, but it was pretty bad. Some water-dwellers apparently didn't like it very much either. After the girls entice the men into the water by removing their bikini tops, the poor boys are dragged under the water.

On shore, another girl steals one of the boy's phones to gaze longingly at his selfies. Once the siren girls leave, the phone stealing girl drags the object of her affection from the water and after a little CPR, he coughs up some water. She flashes glowy eyes and webbed hands before disappearing. Mermaid anyone?

Jake, our lucky survivor, files a missing persons report on his friend Dan, who turns up dead of course. As Jake leads Nick and Hank to the scene of the crime, Nick's new super hearing detects an eavesdropper. It's our fishy savior. He chases after her, but she escapes into the river and demonstrates some impressive swimming speed before she surfaces with her glowy eyes staring back at him. After hearing Nick's description of the girl, Capt. Renard suggests they round up the “unusual suspects”. He then goes to his office to make a phone call to his compatriot in Austria who has sent him a picture of Adalind. Apparently, it's just now occurring to the good Captain that Adalind is the one with a royal baby on the way. Oops.

'Grimm' Recap: 'A Dish Best Served Cold'

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “Tis Death's Park, where he breeds life to feed him. Cries of pain are music for his banquet.”

It's Pigs vs. Wolves tonight, folks! It's not looking good for the Wolves though. While Nick is obsessing over his zombie induced crimes, some Blutbads (wolves) end up in trees with their bellies ruptured out. Turns out both victims patronized the restaurant Raven and Roe's.

It turns out all of the staff at this particular establishment are Wesen of the Bauerschwein variety. Or piggies, for people like me. In case you missed previous seasons, the two do not like each other, at all. When Nick describes the deaths to her, Juliette helpfully demonstrates some veterinary knowledge of bloat in dogs that might explain them. That's divulging confidential information on an active police investigation isn't it? Nevermind, it has the desired effect of kickstarting a few wheels in Nicks scruffy-faced head. Fortunately, work gets put on hold while he heads over to Monroe's to move out his things.

You see, Monroe asked Rosalee to move in with him over a romantic dinner. She accepted and now Nick gets to move back in with Juliette. He is treated to a surprise party when she sends him off to move his things. They get another surprise when Monroe gets a call about a missing friend. This friend is also a Blutbad, and ate at the same restaurant as Monroe and Rosalee. You guessed it. They ate at Raven and Roe's.

'Grimm' recap: 'PTZD'

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “It is not more surprising to be born twice than once; everything in nature is resurrection.”

Post Traumatic Zombie Disorder strikes Portland.

Zombie Nick is still roaming the countryside with Monroe and Hank in pursuit. He proceeds to terrorize a picturesque family who have just arrived home. Nick invites himself in by breaking through the door while the family runs screaming upstairs. Fortunately the screams draw the attention of Monroe, who has briefly lost the scent in the woods. They step in and try to subdue the crazed Grimm, who exhibits some extraordinary reflexes. Again setting us up for a new and more powerful Grimm when this is all over.

The pair flee the house and call Renard and the ladies for some backup. Nick pursues the pair into the barn and up into a hayloft, because no zombie story is complete without a barn. Renard, Rosalee and Juliette show up just in time to defuse the angry homeowner. They tell him the crazed lunatic in his barn is Thomas Scherack, the name on Nick's fake passport so conveniently provided by Renard's evil brother.

In the end, it takes the entire group to bring Zombie Nick down. Rosalee and Juliette are able to inject him with the antidote and he collapses. They haul him off to The Spice Shop and handcuff him to a bed. He wakes up, of course, after a lot of hand-ringing by Juliette.

'Grimm' recap: 'The Ungrateful Dead'

BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “But if I stand at the sick person's feet, he is mine.”

What better way to start off Season Three of "Grimm" than right where they left off? Of course, that means ZOMBIES! We start off with a brief refresher from last season. Creepy Voodoo Baron has been running around spitting on people and turning them into zombies. This is just a distraction to draw Nick into a trap for Eric, the evil half-brother of Capt. Renard.

Monroe, Rosalee, Juliette, and Nick end up chasing the Baron into the container yard where they are set upon by crazed zombies. Nick gets separated from the group and soon finds himself alone with Baron Creepy, who does what creepy people do, and spits on him. Nick promptly falls into a zombifying sleep in a coffin set to whisk him off to a castle in Europe. One presumes this isn't for a party. At least not one Nick will enjoy.

The rest of the gang jumps in the truck and inadvertently play a little GTA, running over zombie people. They are eventually forced from the vehicle when Monroe crashes into a pothole, and makes their last stand atop the shipping containers stacked around them. Juliette manages to stop kicking zombies long enough to call Hank and Wu in for reinforcements.

Meanwhile, Renard has tracked his brother to the other side of the facility. He's too late to rescue Nick, but he does get to wrestle with some zombies as well. Personally, I think the zombies just heard about last season's Shirtless Rage scene and wanted in on the action. Maybe that's just me. Wu and friends proceed to round up zombies and shove them in one of the containers. While Renard and Hank go after Eric, Monroe and the ladies head off to make more zombie curing potion.

'Grimm' teams with Dark Horse Deluxe for show collectibles

Design for Nick's key
The fairy-tale stories of NBC's Grimm are getting just a little bit closer to the real world. On Sept. 25, 2013, Dark Horse Comic's collectibles imprint Dark Horse Deluxe is set to release some cool new NBC licensed products based on the cop drama-meets-fairy tale show.

Dark Horse Deluxe's initial Grimm product line has a variety of items, but includes two primary centerpieces. The first is Nick's Key, the subject of much of the conflict in the show. The wearable pin/pendant even includes the etchings on the sides, which in the show reveal a secret map. A lot of people are interested in where this map leads and just what is hidden there. This Key first appears in the “Pilot” episode of Grimm.

The second item is a pin version of a coin of Zakynthos. These coins have been the object of many a power hungry being from Julius Caesar to Adolf Hitler. They hold strange powers which strongly effect everyone but a Grimm, and were introduced in the Season One episode "Three Coins in a Fuchsbau."

Nick has been struggling for three seasons now to keep both of these items out of the grasp of the conniving royal families that would use them to gain even more power. But now you can have them both!

The product line is rounded out with a lunchbox, a pint glass, a coffee mug and an embroidered skull-design patch. More products will follow including journals, cards, some lenticular products, and character busts. So check out your favorite Dark Horse products retailer on Sept. 25, 2013 to snatch up your favorite before the royal families get them all.

And don't forget Grimm returns to Friday nights this fall.

'Grimm' recap: 'Goodnight, Sweet Grimm'

Zombies are hungry for more Monroemance
BY MELISSA HARKNESS

Opening Quote: “And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Here we are, the season finale of Grimm. Last week left us with a hankering for some more zombie carnage, the meeting of two Royal brothers, and the end of wimpy Juliette. If there is one thing I truly want to see this series kill off, it is the weak pathetic Juliette we have suffered through this season. I hope she is gone for good and we finally get to see her character get a backbone.

That being said, Nick is back to having to date her again. Awkward date is awkward. They both seem to be having some trouble dealing with Juliette's new found knowledge of Nick's alternate life. They soon work through it and proceed to the making out stage.
