Demi Lovato Reveals Her Beliefs on Aliens and Mermaids on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers'

Courtesy MTV
Pop star, Demi Lovato believes in aliens and mermaids and she's hell bent on convincing not only Seth Meyers but the rest of us. She has her theories and the exchange between Lovato and Meyers on his June 4 show is pretty amusing. She even cites the mermaid "documentary" on the Discovery Channel (Animal Planet). She is, however, on the fence about Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and that silly moon landing thingy. Sigh.

On aliens, Lovato states, "I know that they are real. How self-centered would we be, as humans, to believe that we are the only living things in the universe?” Meyers ain't buying it, "Well, call me self-centered, because I don't believe in aliens." On mermaids, she mentions how Christopher Columbus saw three of them on his journey to America but that they don't look like the pretty sea creatures we see in books. She calls mermaids, "an alien species living in parts of the Indian Ocean, which we have never explored before as human beings -- and Christopher Columbus had actually seen three mermaids on his way to America." When Meyers wants her to draw a pic of what she thinks these alien mermaids really look like, she says that there are pictures online.

Mermaids Blamed for Prophet's Drowning Death in Zimbabwe

We recently posted about a goblin in Zimbabwe and now we have a story about mermaids being responsible for a prophet's drowning in the African country. A recent report from Nehandaradio.com states that the family of Simbarashe Kamupondera, 31, of Nyeredzi Nhatu apostolic sect, is blaming mermaids, or njuzu, on his "abduction" during a cleansing ceremony in the Ruwa River in Epworth.

According to Magma Mutingwende, Simbarashe’s sister-in-law, “Simbarashe came to stay with us a month ago. He has been telling us that he had a spirit of a mermaid. He also said that a prophet had prayed for a cloth that he gave him to always tie when getting into the waters. Yesterday he bought a new cloth after he had written his name on the old one saying that he could no longer use it. He tied it today before he got into the water.”

Magma also said that the father-of-two was "praying for a female congregant when he was swept away." She is also not going to be mourning his loss and when this went to report on February 9, his wife was still not informed of his "loss." Why? Because they know he will be coming back.

This isn't the first time the njuzu have been reported on in Zimbabwe. In 2010, Nehandaradio also reported on pictures of dead mermaids surfacing.

Animal Planet's 'River Monsters' finds Loch Ness Monster and it is a ... shark?

If you think shows about fishing are boring and have nothing to do with cryptozoology, well, you would be Animal Planet has kept audiences on the edge of their seats as they journey with Jeremy Wade into mysterious places in search of fresh water nightmares on River Monsters.
sorely mistaken. Since 2009,

Now here's where some crypto action comes in (well, in addition to the whole mermaid thing): In the show’s third season (airing in 2011) he traveled to Japan, where he set out to discover the true identity of the legendary water-spirit, the Kappa. After going on a seemingly endless chase, Wade finally meets up with a scientist that has been working on preserving the endangered Japanese giant salamander, or Hanzaki. Upon examining and wrangling one of the creatures out of the shallow waters for himself, Wade decides that it is highly likely that the Hanzaki is in fact the culprit behind the legend of the Kappa. For many viewers, that was the most recognizable monster to date. That is, until now...

Fake mermaids bring real numbers to Animal Planet

Once again, a documentary about "real" mermaids has led to very real numbers for Animal Planet. Last Sunday's Mermaids: The New Evidence, the sequel to last year's docufiction, ahem, netted 3.6 million viewers, providing the network with numbers that crush even Puppy Bowl numbers. But before you bust out your seashell bras and Dinglehoppers, take a deep breath and sit down; mermaids are unfortunately, still not real.

If you'll remember, in 2012, Animal Planet aired Mermaids: The Body Found, a faux-doc about a group of scientists who discovered a recording of inexplicable sounds from the oceans depths and the investigation that followed. Borrowing heavily from the widely panned aquatic ape hypothesis (Elaine Morgan, The Aquatic Ape Hypothesis, 1982), the show delves into the "science" behind how our ancestors adapted into aquatic beings...

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

They say Mermaids are the "next big thing" within the paranormal. If that's true, there were a lot of them on Saturday, June 18, at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in New York City. The parade occurs every year on the third Saturday of June, and is something of a Mardi Gras for NYC - except with a nautical theme. Here are just a few of the images we caught of the colorful characters from 2011.

(Beware, land lubber. These Mermaids aren't used to being completely clothed, so there be potentially NSFW partial nudity in these parts)

'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' trailer debuts

After the previous Pirates of the Caribbean installments failed to shiver me timbers, I should be more hesitant about another adventure for Capt. Jack Sparrow - but what can I say, I'm an Arrrr-dent supporter of pirate movies.  Ahem.

Anyhow, this one looks pretty good.  After shedding the dead weight of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, Sparrow sets out on a quest for the Fountain of Youth along with Barbossa (who is currently stealing the show in The King's Speech) and his poppy pirate Keith Richards, as well as new additions Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane as Blackbeard.  Instead of skeletal ghosts, it looks like the monsters of the moment will be zombies (looks like the enchanted kind, not the undead) and mermaids.

One small quibble, though: Is it much of a quest when everyone knows the Fountain of Youth was discovered long ago by Ponce de Leon and it's located in St. Augustine, Fl.?
