FoxNext, the 21st Century Fox video game division, is getting ready to deliver some mighty xenomorphin' times to players after announcing a new shooter for PCs and consoles based on the Alien franchise.
The news, via press release, comes after the division acquired developer Cold Iron Studios.
According to the release, acquiring the developer is part of a “commitment to deliver new AAA offerings across numerous fan favorite properties and original games.”
Aaron Loeb, president of studios at FoxNext Games went on: “Cold Iron Studios has amazing design, craftsmanship and development talent that we are excited to welcome at FoxNext Games as we pursue our goal to build a multi-platform, multi-genre portfolio of great games ... I am a personal fan of Cold Iron’s previous work and all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe.”
Thus far Cold Iron hasn't shipped a game, but the team behind it has worked on BioShock Infinite and Metroid Prime 3.
Previous Alien video games -- Sega's Aliens vs. Predator (2010), Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013) and Alien: Isolation (2014) -- were all developed by Sega, and have a mixed record. But if FoxNext's faith is well-placed in Cold Iron, then there is a lot of opportunity to deliver a tense, horror-centric shooter that honors the franchise, and satisfies players.
Release is TBD.
What would you want to see from a new Alien video game?

In your bloody face: The potential of horror on VR
Virtual reality gaming (or "VR" as the cool kids say) is pretty much upon us, and that means that perhaps as soon as a few months from now we'll be looking at an entirely new form of in-home gaming entertainment.
No, VR headsets probably aren't replacing your PS4s and Xbox Ones (and, I guess, Wii Us), at least not in the early going, but they will be offering some incredibly exciting new experiences to get into. The fun part right now is figuring out what, exactly, those new experiences are going to look like!
More specifically, that means guessing at which genres of gaming will make the biggest impact on VR in the early days. One that gets a lot of attention is racing, mostly because of a few titles that have been announced. There's kind of an inherent value to a VR racing game in that it doesn't make you feel like you have to get up and walk around. In a VR shooter, one supposes, you'll feel a strong urge to take off running, ducking and tumbling. In a racing game you can be moving 130 mph without you needing to do anything but sit there, which seems pretty ideal for VR. An article by Jalopnik touched on this same idea while providing a few examples from existing racing simulators on VR, and frankly it all looks pretty great.
Another type of entertainment that's receiving a little less buzz but may also be ideally suited to VR is casino gaming. This is not just because casino games are inherently simple (at least in terms of graphics and gameplay), but also because existing digital casinos have already made leaps and bounds in approximating realistic experiences. At Gala's live casino, players can now choose to interact with, well, "live" dealers while playing games like blackjack, roulette, or Texas hold'em. That means that instead of cards simply appearing on your screen, a human being is facing you and interacting with you, dishing out cards and controlling the game. Cup your hands around your eyes and look ahead and it's almost VR already, so it's easy to imagine this sort of game thriving once the new headsets come out.
Aside from these clear picks to thrive on VR, it also seems absolutely inevitable that horror games will make their way to the new platform, and likely in spectacular fashion. And I don't actually say this because creepy and scary games have been popular on the best consoles for some time now. It's actually because of how similar games have thrived on mobile devices.
Mobile games require intriguing design and compelling atmosphere to really excel against their endless competition, and in a way this has helped some creepy experiences rise to the top of the heap. From Simogo's Year Walk to Phosphor Game Studio's Dark Meadow: The Pact, there are actually a lot of mobile gaming experiences for which it's commonly recommended that you turn off the lights and/or put in headphones! That's meant to be a way of fully immersing yourself in the spooky atmospheres these games present, and the result can be pretty genuinely unsettling. Basically, we've seen horror games move from those with scary storylines, dark areas and sudden dangers to experiences that make you feel like you're actually in a horrifying place.
And what could be more appealing for someone developing a new VR game? The whole point of this phenomenon is to take us out of our living rooms and basements and plop us into the environments of our video games. And that's not going to be more effective anywhere than it will be in horror. This is why it's such good news that there are already some intriguing VR horror games that have been announced.
We've still got a little ways to go before VR's takeover truly begins. The headset rollout is proving slow, and it's likely we won't see a particularly large selection of games for another year or two. But when the time comes, amazing horror experiences seem like a sure thing.

'Sharknado' Gets Video Game & Survival Guide Adaptations
If you know anything about "Sharknado," you'll know it isn't a game. Well, except now it is. Following the announcement that "Sharknado" merchandise would be storming retail stores, Syfy revealed that an iPhone runner game to be released this month.
Developed by Syfy, production studio Asylum and game company Other Ocean (and published by Majesco Entertainment), the appopriately-titled "Sharknado: The Video Game" will be set in New York City and allow players to assume the role of Fin (Ian Ziering) as he fights back against the man-eating tempests. The game will allow you to wield a broadsword; bounce off the backs of tiger sharks; feed buckets of fish to sharks; avoid "hammerhead stampedes" by surfing through a flooded Manhattan; and, of course, use a chainsaw to destroy a shark from the inside.
“When Majesco approached us about making a 'Sharknado' game, we said ‘yes’ before they’d even finished asking,” said game designer Frank Cifaldi. “The game we came up with is very much in the spirit of the films: ridiculous, overblown, yet oddly sincere. We can’t wait for fans to sink their teeth into it.”
As if a game is not enough, "Sharknado" is being turned into an educational opportunity through a new book, on sale now, called "How To Survive A Sharknado And Other Unnatural Disasters." Written by Andrew Shaffer -- with "contributions" from Fin and fellow survivor April -- the book from Three Rivers Press is a guide to battling hungry monsters and a ticked-off Mother Nature.
According to its description, the "live-saving" reference book provides "vital information on everything from firenados and swamp volcanoes to arachnoquakes and piranhacondas." This promises to be a go-to book, complete with cocktail recipes, that helps you avoid freaking out during freaky occurrences. And yes, it does teach "How To Wield A Chainsaw Like A Boss."
“When I saw 'Sharknado,' I really took Fin Shepard’s mantra, Semper Paratus (Always ready), to heart. Sure, other books can help you fend off your garden-variety shark, but what do you do when angry, chomping Great Whites are flying at your head?" said Matt Inman, the acquiring editor at Crown Publishing. "[The book] answers that critical question, and many more."

Bustin' Still Makes Us Feel Good: The 'Ghostbusters' Legacy 30 Years Later
BY RICK CORNERSTONE
Thirty years later, even with its aged special effects and goofy plot, "Ghostbusters" continues to make audiences laugh. The movie that steadily holds a 97% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes has established itself as a comedy classic ever since its release in 1984.
Part of the reason the franchise is so successful is because they've managed to stay relevant over time, consistently appealing to new generations as the years pass. So just how did they manage to achieve what every other film franchise dreams of doing? By producing a quality film in addition to some fruitful marketing moves.

'Game of Thrones' Meets 8-Bit Super Mario Bros.
Now this is nifty. YouTube user NicksplosionFX is obviously a "Game of Thrones" geek who has a deep, abiding love for "Super Marios Bros." because the 8-bit artist re-creates the opening credits from GoT in classic video game goodness by transforming them into a tour of the Mushroom Kingdom. Nicksplosion also provides a pretty cool 8-bit version of the "Thrones" theme song (which may become my new ringtone).

'Paranormal State' Returns- In Video Game Form
The "Paranormal State" team is back, and this time they want to play a game with you. Available today is "Paranormal State: Poison Spring," an iPad game that allows players to join Ryan Buell (and Heather Taddy, Sergey Poberezhny) and the Paranormal Research Society for a ghost investigation.
The game, which was released in PC format last October, is a hidden object game with voice-acted cutscenes surrounding an investigation of "a terrifying supernatural event at Poison Spring State Park, historical site to a grisly Civil War battle." And yes, that was a real battle, fought in Arkansas, and was a notable battle involving the the First Kansas Colored Infantry.
Debuting on A&E in 2007, "Paranormal State" was an early competitor to "Ghost Hunters" in the paranormal investigation docuseries genre. However, it has been off the year for three years. So while this game is oddly timed, it may be fans' best bet for new PRS adventures for now.
Created by A&E, publisher Legacy Interactive -- which is behind TV-inspired games "Twilight Zone," "Ghost Whisperer," "Psych," and "House M.D." -- and Polish game developer Teyon, "Poison Spring" was initially offered as a PC game on LegacyGames for $13.95, then $9.95. On the iPad, the download is free but the "Collector's Edition" unlock (which you'll probably need to play the entire game) is $6.95.
Based on the trailer below, the game isn't the sleekest of designs (and I'm sorry but who approved the digitized version of Ryan Buell, a handsome young guy, which looks like Michael Madsen?) but I cannot comment on the gameplay. Although, it's not a great sign that the support for the game seems pretty nonexistent and the website went dormant for about six months and still haven't added a press release. So this doesn't seem like a game that A&E or Legacy expects to do bang-up numbers, or even show much love for.
But if you've downloaded it and you do love it, let us know and we'll spread the word.

The game is a continuation on the first, which follows young orphan girl, Clementine, as she tries to survive on her own in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. 'Chucky: Slash & Dash' Available Soon For Your Mobile Devices
"Chucky" (aka Charles Lee Ray) of "Child's Play" instilled a healthy fear of dolls (and gingers) in most 80s children. And just like his character, the franchise isn't going away anytime soon. Last seen in "Seed of Chucky" (2004), Charles Lee Ray will be returning to his Good Guy doll body in "Curse of Chucky", set to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray and VOD this September. In addition to a new movie, the folks at Slimstown Studios are releasing the first ever, officially licensed mobile game based off of the movies.
Currently in development, "Chucky: Slash & Dash," will be available on Apple (iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad) and Android devices. The game is said to be an endless-runner, where you play as Chucky himself.
'Super Mario Bros.' movie gets sequel ... in comic form
If you don't remember (it was 20 years ago after all, and the movie was really bad), the film ended with Daisy (Sarah Polly) bursting in and whisking the brothers off on another adventure. It was quite the cliff hanger and just begging for a sequel. Well, get ready because that sequel is finally on its way; this time taking comic book form.
Super Mario Bros 2: The Sequel, is currently in the works, and to make fans even more excited? Comic creators Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum have actually met with Parker Bennett, the script writer of the original movie to ensure the sequel is entirely canon.
For more information and to get some sneak peeks at the comic, be sure to check out the SMB2 site!

'Plants vs. Zombies 2' takes over Seattle Space Needle with announcement
The Space Needle, that iconic Seattle landmark, has been taken over by zombies! Don't worry though, it just got a little redecorated to celebrate the release of PopCap Games Plants Vs. Zombies 2!
“PopCap was founded in Seattle, and we’re on 4th Avenue, so when we walk out, we see the Space Needle. So we wanted to team up with these guys [for the launch],” Jeremy Vanderhoozer, creative director behind the game, explained to KOMO News. EA Games acquired PopCap back in 2011.
After nearly two years of development, Vanderhoozer was on site at the Space Needle to launch the new game. The day was made extra special for those in attendance by handing out posters, speaking with fans and a photo op with one of the zombies from the game! Media members were taken up via helicopter to view the new art-work atop the Space Needle:
A zombie holding a message that reads "Hello Seattle, we are about to launch an all-out attack on your city. Sincerely, the Zombies."
The game itself, is being given away for free, with some pretty ingenious paid options available as well. Vanerhoozer says that the paid options are not "pay-to-win" like traditional pricing. He promises the game will be a lot like it's predecessor, Plants Vs. Zombies, with new plants, new worlds ... and the element of time-travel. He added that the game is a "living game ... we'll be updating it. We'll keep adding things to it." So keep your peepers peeled for updates!
While nothing has officially been announced, Vanderhoozen hinted that the PopCap crew and the Space Needle would be teaming up again regarding Plants Vs. Zombies 2. Stay tuned.

Watch 'The Last of Us' movie - kind of
How many of you lucky souls have been hiding in your darkened apartment, kept away from civilization, not getting things done for work on time because you are too busy playing The Last of Us? I’m sure there are lots of us out there.
The characters feel real as they struggle to survive in the post-apocalyptic mutant game one of the most gripping stories ever and the best PS3 game of all time. But for the non-gamers out there, one fan (named "dansg08") devotedly put about six hours of cut scenes and dialogue together on YouTube as a for everyone to enjoy -- and to understand why everyone is talking about this game.
The user said he posted the 6-hour (yelp!) video together to present the story for those unable to play.

1989 'Friday the 13th' video game gets the NECA toy treatment
If you're like us, you have so many memories of the Friday the 13th Nintendo game… and most of them are bad.
Still, just the idea of playing a game based on the R-rated series was shocking. It wasn’t the best game, but it has a lot of nostalgic value for Friday fans. Thankfully the crafty devils at NECA are just as nostalgic! They recently revealed their newest Jason Voorhees figure in their Friday the 13th line as a tribute to that purple and blue 8-bit Jason!
The idea actually came from Will Edwards, a fan, who really dug the 1989 Nintendo look and tweeted images over to NECA. Turns out they really loved the suggestion. However, it’s only a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive, and according to NECA, it’ll cost you $25 and will be available at their booth!

'Resident Evil' creator turns towards 'The Evil Within'
It’s no secret the Resident Evil game series lost its touch long ago. Somewhere down the road, it focused more on action rather than survival horror. In the beginning, you found yourself running from enemies, low on ammo. Now you are running up to them and unloading buckets of ammo or slashing at them with your knife to humiliate them.
It was unfortunate that Resident Evil 6 failed to deliver to its fans, but some good has come out of it.
'Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon' DLC gets retro
"Blood Dragon" (trailer embedded after the jump) is being described by Ubisoft as "an 80’s VHS vision of the future," and from the trailer, it certainly shows. As the neon lasers, mutants, dinosaurs, cyborg-infused characters, 80’s electro-synth soundtrack and bright florescent colors absorb into every one of your five senses, dreams from your childhood will flash before your eyes.
Mobile zombie game 'Into the Dead' reaches 10 million downloads
The bleak, post-apocalyptic graphics and eerie sounds in this first-person perspective game make you feel as if you're actually trying to shoot and run your way through a mass of hungry, undead fiends.
Into the Dead offers a variety of unlockable weapons and missions, as well as an option to compete against your friends. There are also constant upgrades, and soon-to-be-released companions -- just like on your favorite Zompoc games available for your home gaming systems.
The free app is available on iOS and Android devices, but there is an option to upgrade to an ad-free version for $2. As game site Joystiq points out, if only 10 percent of players purchased the ad-free game, that's $2,000,000 for PikPok. That's pretty lively for an undead game.
