Paranormal Pop Culture: 2014 Winter TV Guide

The holidays are over and now we can resume watching not only our favorite TV programs but also get addicted to some new shows. From blood-suckers to aliens to ghosts, there's something for everyone to enjoy from the comfort of their couch.

Syfy is handing out the goodies with their new shows "Helix," Bitten," and "Opposite Worlds." The CW is starting off the new year with the return of "Arrow," new fan-fav, "The Originals," as well as introducing us to "The 100." Some shows are returning but don't yet have a premiere date locked down, for example, "Mountain Monsters" will be returning to Destination America in "early 2014" and we're eagerly awaiting a premiere date for "Game of Thrones." So here you go! A winter and early spring guide to new and old.
JANUARY

MONSTERS & MYSTERIES IN AMERICA
The second season of this myth and legend series continues to explore hell hounds, evil gnomes, skunk apes, lizard men and more on Destination America. The season premiered in December and new episodes continue through March. Make a note, however, that the time slot has shifted to Sundays at 9 p.m. instead of 10 p.m.

GRIMM
After battling the Krampus, the third season of "Grimm" returned to NBC on Friday, January 3 with "Red Menace." "Grimm" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET. Check back here on Saturdays for Melissa's recaps.

DRACULA
The dashing Count came back into our lives on January 3 at 10 p.m. with its seventh episode, "Servant to Two Masters." It finishes out its first 10-episode season on Friday, January 24. "Dracula" airs on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.

TEEN WOLF
"Teen Wolf"'s season three winter premiere kicks off with a door being opened and evil being unleashed. The series returns to MTV on Monday, January 6 at 10 p.m. ET. Stay tuned at 11 p.m. for the new post-show called "Wolf Watch."



ALMOST HUMAN
Season One of Fox's "Almost Human" continues on Monday, January 6 at 8 p.m. ET with the episode "Simon Says," Synopsis: "A psychopathic killer is strapping bombs to his victims' necks and broadcasting their final moments."

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF  S.H.I.E.L.D.
The first season returns to Fox on Tuesday, January 7 at 8 p.m. ET with the episode "The Magical Place." Agent Coulson learns more about the mystery of his death, but the information may come at too high a cost.

INTELLIGENCE
Series Premiere

CBS debuts its newest series, "Intelligence," on Tuesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. ET. The cyber-themed action drama stars Josh Holloway and Marg Helgenberger. Holloway stars as Gabriel Vaughn, a "high-tech intelligence operative enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain," allowing him to be the first human ever to be connected directly into the global information grid.

DOOMSDAY PREPPERS
Prepare for the end when an all new season of "Doomsday Preppers" returns to the National Geographic Channel on Tuesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. ET.

RAVENSWOOD

The winter premiere of ABC Family's new drama, "Ravenswood," airs Tuesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. ET with its sixth episode titled "Revival." Here is part of the synopsis, compliments of its Wiki page:
Fresh off his trip to Rosewood, Caleb struggles to deal with the aftermath of his brief time with Miranda on the other side. Remy realizes her dreams may be the best clue they have into understanding the pact, but she unwittingly attracts something that is determined to make sure Remy doesn’t wake up. And Miranda decides to haunt Mrs. Grunwald for answers but discovers Grunwald may have a ghostly friend of her own.

REVOLUTION
"Revolution" returns this winter with the episode, "Three Amigos." According to NBC, the episode has Neville and Julia mounting "a new plot while Aaron quests after the nannies." The winter premiere is Wednesday, January 8 at 8 p.m. ET.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN
The ladies are back from their winter break and are joined by a musical icon for their mid-season return. Watch "The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks" on Wednesday, January 8 at 10 p.m. on FX. Learn more about this episode here.



HELIX
Series Premiere
Syfy's newest drama is described as, "...an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind's salvation...or total annihilation." It debuts on Friday, January 10 at 10 p.m. ET.

10 MILLION DOLLAR BIGFOOT BOUNTY
Series Premiere

Hosted by Dean Cain, undeniable proof of the elusive cryptic is the name of the game when Spike debuts its "10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty" on Friday, January 10 at 10 p.m. ET. Read more about the show here.

LOST GIRL
From Syfy: This season on "Lost Girl," fate casts a wide shadow over the Fae world. With Bo’s (Anna Silk) return, the lines between Dark and Light Fae are blurred, causing her to embark on a journey of discovery. Bo and company will ultimately realize that, regardless of the challenges and enemies they face, they’re stronger when they confront them together. George Takei ("Star Trek") and Ali Liebert ("Bomb Girls") are among the new season’s guest stars. "Lost Girl" returns to Syfy on Monday, January 13 at 8 p.m. ET.

BEING HUMAN
"Being Human" returns on Monday, January 13 at 9 p.m. ET and according to Syfy, the fourth season picks up four months later and unfortunately for Aidan, Sally, Josh and Nora, their past is coming back to haunt them.
From Syfy:
Aidan (Sam Witwer) and Nora (Kristen Hager) struggle to save Josh (Sam Huntington), who is trapped in his wolf form. At the same time, an unbelievable visitor collides with Aidan, forcing him to make impossible choices between the people he loves the most. Meanwhile, Sally (Meaghan Rath), having been dragged down into her death spot by witch Donna (guest star Amy Aquino), finds herself trapped and at the mercy of her foe, but Sally’s newly imbued magical powers could change everything.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Some significant changes will be happening when "Beauty and the Beast" returns to the CW on Monday, January 13 at 9 p.m. with "Don't Die On Me."


SLEEPY HOLLOW
Fox's newest hit, "Sleepy Hollow," returns on Monday, January 13 at 9 p.m. ET with the eleventh episode of the first season, "The Vessel." According to tv.com, "Abbie and Ichabod must find a way to save Abbie's sister, Jenny, who has been possessed by an evil spirit."

BITTENSeries Premiere
Syfy is debuting one of its new series, "Bitten," on Monday, January 13 at 10 p.m. ET. According to Syfy's show description:
Desperate to escape both a world she never wanted to be part of and the man who turned her into a werewolf, Elena (Laura Vandervoort) has abandoned her Pack and taken refuge in a new city. There, she works as a photographer and hides her werewolf existence from her new boyfriend. When bodies start turning up in her Pack’s backyard, Elena finds herself back at Stonehaven, the werewolves’ ancestral domain. Torn between two worlds and two loves, she quickly realizes that – when push comes to shove – she’ll stop at nothing to defend her Pack.

FACE OFF
Syfy's hit reality competition series "Face Off" kicks off its sixth season on Tuesday, January 14 at 9 p.m. with the "Beauty and the Beast"-themed, "Sexy Beasts." The first episode will have the 15 new contestants having to create an original "Beast" who would live in a castle with Belle. The new season promises bolder designs. bigger risks and surprise destinations, so be sure to tune in!

THE ORIGINALS
This spin-off of "The Vampire Diaries" returns to the CW on Tuesday, January 14 at 8 p.m. with its tenth episode, "The Casket Girls." Here's the synopsis from its Wiki page:

As the French Quarter prepares for its annual celebration of the Casket Girls Festival, Cami suffers through as Davina attempts to free her of Klaus mind compulsion. Elijah and Marcel form an unlikely alliance as Klaus sets his plan in motion to get Davina back. Once it’s known that Davina is missing, Sophie gets in on the hunt to track her down. Meanwhile, Hayley is forced to make a tough decision after receiving an unexpected phone call, and Rebekah sets her own plan in motion when she enlists the help of someone from Marcel’s past.

SUPERNATURAL
Take a "Road Trip" when "Supernatural" resumes its ninth season on the CW. The series returns Tuesday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET. Here's a peek...



ARROW

When "Arrow" returns to the CW on Wednesday, January 15 at 8 p.m., expect an explosive episode with "Blast Radius." Here's a preview:


THE TOMORROW PEOPLE
They are the "the next evolutionary leap of mankind, a generation of humans born with paranormal abilities" and "The Tomorrow People" return to the CW on Wednesday, January 15 at 9 p.m. ET. Click here for a look.

Head back to the East Village's iconic Obscura Antiques & Oddities shop for a look at what bizarre and wonderful artifacts Mike, Evan and Ryan have in store. "Oddities" airs on the Science Channel and returns on Saturday, January 18 at 8 p.m. ET with all new episodes.

OPPOSITE WORLDSSeries Premiere
We've been anticipating Syfy's new reality series for a few months now and it's ready to debut on Syfy this Tuesday, January 21 at 10 p.m. ET.
From Syfy: In “Opposite Worlds,” 14 people from all walks of life face off in opposing teams that live in a house separated into two distinctly different worlds: one past and one future, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Adding to the drama is a glass wall dividing the house into the two environments, allowing the teams to watch, envy and dread each other's every move.

GHOST HUNTERS
Syfy's longest-running unscripted series, "Ghost Hunters" returns with all new episode on Wednesday, January 22 at 9 p.m. ET.
Here are more details on the season thanks to Syfy:
For its first episode back, TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society), led by Jason Hawes, heads to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as the town commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg. There, the team collects impressive paranormal evidence at a variety of locations. Other famed sites getting the Ghost Hunters treatment this season include Buffalo and Erie County's Naval & Military Park, Historic Jordan Springs in Winchester, Virginia and Belle Grove Plantation in King George, Virginia.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
The CW's hit series, "The Vampire Diaries," returns on Thursday, January 23 at 8 p.m. with the episode "500 Years of Solitude." Click here to head to their main site and get an inside look.

FEBRUARY

THE WALKING DEAD
The ninth episode of "The Walking Dead"'s fourth season returns to AMC on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. Check out the promo for the mid-season premiere:



THE TALKING DEAD
Of course, it has become something of a Sunday night ritual to follow new episodes of The Walking Dead with the post-show talk show hosted by Nerdist's Chris Hardwick. That also returns February 9, but at 11 p.m. after new episodes of Comic Book Men with Kevin Smith.

GHOST ADVENTURES
Having just ended their highest rated season, the ninth season of The Travel's Channel's, "Ghost Adventures" begins this February. Keep checking back here for more updates on the premiere date and episode content.
