Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Justice League Dark’ Aims For a Unified DC Universe

Filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro has his hands in several projects and in a recent red carpet interview with Cinefilos, he provided some insight into developments on “Justice League Dark.”

In the interview, he states:

We're still on [Justice League Dark] writing, and hopefully it will happen but there are no developments that are new. It's still at Warner Bros., they are making plans for the entire DC universe. All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They're planning on TV, movies, and all the media, so we have to fit into that plan.

The film is the brainchild of del Toro and is based on the 2011 comic book series. The series originally featured John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man and Zatanna. According to del Toro, in the film, the DC superhero team up against supernatural bad boys will include Swamp Thing, Constantine, The Spectre, Deadman, Zatanna and Zatara.

Also in the brief interview, del Toro discusses the ghost story that he’s been involved with, “Crimson Peak,” and promises “unique-looking ghosts."

Check out the interview and let us know your thoughts. Is DC doing a good job keeping up with Marvel? We'll keep you posted on any new developments.

Guillermo del Toro's 'Crimson Peak' lines up cast

One of the many projects Guillermo del Toro is undertaking is the haunted house horror film, Crimson Peak. He not only wrote the script with Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Coxon, but will also be directing this turn of the century ghost story/gothic romance.

Details on the plot are limited but del Toro told Deadline that the film can best be described as "a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules."

This Legendary Pictures production has assembled quite the cast, including Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), and Charlie Hunnam, who is in del Toro’s most recent film, Pacific Rim. Stone and Hunnam will play the lead roles. Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) has also been recently added to the cast.. We know that she’s no stranger to horror since she starred in the surprise hit Mamaexecutive produced by del Toro.

Also, if you remember, a few years back del Toro was planning a scary reboot of the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie, based on the Disney theme park attraction. The plan was to give the paranormal ride a Pirates of the Caribbean counterpart. Although del Toro left that project, maybe he took some cool ideas from the development.

No release date has been announced but it is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2014.

Over at MTV Geek, our very own Aaron Sagers chatted up DC Comics' Just League Dark co-writer Ray Fawkes about the epic new storyline he's launching in issue #19, hitting stands April 17.

Fawkes -- who also revealed pages from the upcoming issue -- said this is a story arc that changes everything and really brings the paranormal/supernatural super hero team to the awareness of the big boys, like Superman and Wonder Woman.

Also, Fawkes teases the fact that, in addition to Swamp Thing entering the JLD ranks (sort of), we'll be treated to a Flash guest-star and the introduction of a big bad that will be new, but different.

Head on over to MTV Geek for the story, but in the meantime, refresh yourself on director Guillermo del Toro's chat about the very cool JLD title and his plans to turn it into a movie.
