Does Star Wars and Men in Black Occur in the Same Universe?

Even though the events in the Star Wars saga took place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far way, they were so memorable they are still influencing life in this galaxy, right here on planet Earth, in modern times. At least, that seems to be the case in the Men in Black universe, where the aliens of Star Wars might possibly exist.

The 1997 film Men in Black introduced audiences to the secret MiB agency that manages and polices the affairs of extraterrestrials living on our planet, but who hide from normal humans. Starring Will Smith as rookie MiB Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as veteran Agent K, the movie was a massive success, cemented Smith's status as an A-list movie star, and launched a franchise.
But it also revealed who the "real" aliens are among the celebrity set. During his first day of on-the-job orientation Agent J is shown a display of some of the famous faces living on Earth who are actually aliens in disguise.

About That Time Kenny Rogers Was Abducted by Aliens

When Kenny Rogers passed away on March 20, 2020, he left behind a legacy as a pop culture icon who was an actor, musician, restaurateur, and a gambler who knew when to hold ‘em, fold ‘em, walk away, or run.

But the country singer also made a mark in paranormal pop culture with “Planet Texas,” the second single from his 1989 album Something Inside So Strong.

The tune is about a cowboy who encounters a trio of space dudes out of the sky with high-tech horses, domed helmets over their white hats, laser pistols, and anodized spurs.

These cowboys weren’t common buckaroos of the human race, and instead - spoiler alert - came from Planet Texas. Throughout the course of the song, and the video directed by Julien Temple (known for his films featuring the Sex Pistols), the aliens take Kenny’s cowboy character on a horseback tour of Saturn’s rings, passing by John Denvers floating in space for some reason.

They eventually hop on a tail of a comet and ride to Planet Texas, where Kenny signs his name on the planet’s surface, alongside other famous Texans Roy Orbison, LBJ, Waylon Jennings and, oddly enough, the fictional J.R. Ewing from Dallas.

Project Blue Book's Aidan Gillen, aka J. Allan Hynek, on the Season 1 Finale

[A previous version of this story was published at IGN]

BY AARON SAGERS

At the end of the Season 1 finale of Project Blue Book, J. Allen Hynek is a man on his own. Following the Washington Flap -- a series of famously well-documented real-life UFO sightings in 1952 fictionalized on the show -- he is warned by mysterious allies they can no longer protect him. But as Hynek looks to the stars from his observatory, Aidan Gillen, who portrays the UFO researcher, is looking ahead to the second season of the History show.

Gillen didn’t know about the Season 2 renewal when the finale ended on that cliffhanger, which also showed Hynek – in a move worthy of the actor’s character Littlefinger from Game of Thrones -- apparently doublecrossing his partner Quinn (Michael Malarkey), only to reveal he was actually pulling the wool over the government’s collective eyes.

David Bowie shared his UFO experiences with Creem Magazine, 44 years ago

More than four decades ago, and just shy of three years after Ziggy Stardust was introduced to the world, David Bowie talked about his flying saucer sightings.

In a story for Creem, "America's Only Rock 'n Roll Magazine" -- home to music critic icon Lester Bangs, and the same publication that coined the term "punk rock" -- the publication had incredible access to musicians. And it shows in the 1975 story by Bruno Stein, "Flying Saucers, Hitler, and David Bowie: World problems solved in U.S. hotel room."

The music writer joined David Bowie and company "in a little town in Missouri." The intimate gathering was called a "soiree," but it really seemed like a loose collection in a hotel suite, consisting of musicians, a newspaper reporter, a handful of crew members, and Bowie himself, exhausted after performing just an hour earlier.

Stein captured the moment perfectly, as Bowie appeared concerned about why his roadie had mysteriously resigned. He aimlessly stalked the hotel room, alternating between engaging in various conversations, and spending time on his own. But he perked up when the topic turned to UFOs, and a supposed flying saucer repair shop in an empty field in Missouri.

Stein quoted Bowie as saying he has a metal pin in his body, and added the musician revealed he worked with an English UFO magazine. Bowie said he witnessed significant UFO activity from an observatory up to seven times a night, over the course of a year. He explained the interaction between craft, and it is frankly bonkers:

CIA archives offer top X-Files UFO cases to intrigue Mulder, Scully

Season 11 of The X-Files launched last night on Fox and, well, it was frustrating. Aside from that twist, the episode felt like an attempt to ignore the problematic Season 10 finale. Still, it was nice to see Mulder and Scully back.

But you know who else was likely happy for new X-Files? The CIA, or at least whoever runs the agency's blog. The site, which seems to have a peppy message when it comes to UFOs has posted quite a few documents from the FOIA archives related to the phenomena.

Some of the documents highlighted by the blog include the 1960 information sheets on how to photograph UFOs (attached below). They also posted a fairly informative and extensive article on how to investigate UFOs.

There's a lot of interesting stuff to read through on the FOIA archives, but perhaps most interesting is the grouping of UFO cases that might target a belief-minded Mulder or, alternately, a more skeptic-minded Scully.

Most of this stuff comes from the early 1950s, in the early days of Project Blue Book (and late stages of Project Grudge). So as much as you want to sink your teeth into the Defense Department's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program that The New York Times exposed last month, you're out of luck.

Still, this is worth a look.

On the Mulder side, there's the "fiery disks" moving vertically and horizontally over Congo Uranium mines in 1952, which was pursued by Commander Pierre, a "dependable officer" in a fighter jet. There's also the 1952 one about the former mayor of a Soviet East Germany who, with his daughter, spotted what looked like a "huge flying pan" with a conical top, from which two figures emerged. There is yet another report on a run-down of sightings from Spain, Tunisia, and Morocco.

Also in 1952 was the "Survey of Flying Saucer Reports" where less than 100 of up to 2,000 "flying saucer" reports were deemed "unexplainable." The survey suggests that these unexplained reports should not reach the public due to its "alarmist tendencies," and that while a rational explanation may be discovered, "interplanetary aspects and alien origin" could not be "thoroughly excluded" from consideration.

On the Scully end of things, there are some scathing reports from a 1953 Scientific Advisory Panel on UFOs; a 1949 government office memo postulating "midsummer madness" as a cause for sightings; and a 1952 memo suggesting a scientific point of view for the "saucer problem" which may call for the inclusion of a Columbia professor, who was considered "the most expert man in the country on magic and general chicanery." Still another talks of the national security implications, and psychological warfare potential, of sightings.

None of these documents are new, nor recently unearthed. And they certainly do not acknowledge any existence in alien life. However, they are a glimpse into early X-Files of a sort, and the interest the U.S. government took (and maybe continues to take?) in UFO sightings.

Megan Fox Believes In Bigfoot, Ghosts and 'Everything' Else

Say what you will about Megan Fox, I can't help but like the gal.  Sure, her film choices have been questionable, to say the least, but she has recently come out of the paranormal closet as one of us (ONE OF US!  ONE OF US!).

While promoting her latest film, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Fox sat down with MTV News's Josh Horowitz to discuss the the movie when the conversation took a turn for the supernatural.

Horowitz asked Fox to expound on her Bigfoot beliefs, something she first made public back in July to People Magazine. Citing recent scientific discoveries and the perceived  intelligence of the Bigfoot creatures (Bigfeet?) along with their ability to stay out of sight and evade capture as a few of the reasons why we have yet to have any solid proof of their existence. Fox used these reasons as a defense of her beliefs, much to the amusement of Horowitz.

Horowitz then went on the ask Fox if she believed in UFOs, "Yes, a thousand percent." She said, before adding, "I believe in everything."

The most entertaining part of the interview came when Fox's recent ghostly encounter while on vacation in Mexico with her children and nanny was shared. Fox said the evening beforehand she order a breakfast room service to be delivered at 7:30am. When she heard the door open, the sound of plates being set and coffee being poured at 7 a.m. -- a full half hour before the service was to arrive -- she waited until the commotion died down before going to eat. When she went to the dining area of her hotel room, nothing was there. No plates, hot coffee or breakfast of any kind. Her nanny even asked, "Why was room service here at seven?"

Fox believes since both her and her nanny heard the phantom breakfast service being prepared, there can only be one explanation for it: ghosts.

Fox is a good sport during the interview, especially when Horowitz teases her and  tries to offer rational explanations for her to consider regarding her paranormal encounter in Mexico.

Thanks to our friend Alejandro Rojas over at Huffington Post for bringing this fun story to our attention!

Roswell Researcher Stanton Friedman Suffers Heart Attack

One of the coolest parts about my job as a journalist, host and professional nerd is that I routinely get to meet with living legends and geek out for an hour or so. That joy extends to the Roswell UFO Festival, which is taking place this week in New Mexico and for which I am currently preparing. Unfortunately, one of those legends will be unable to attend this year.

Stanton Friedman -- a legend of Ufology who has spent more than four decades researching "flying saucers" and the Roswell Incident -- suffered a mild heart attack last Friday night, June 27. Stan is doing OK, but won't be up to attending the festival on doctor's orders (only the second time he's missed it). Fellow noted UFO researcher Kathleen Marden issued this statement via Stan today:
"Stanton Friedman suffered a mild heart attack on Friday night. I spoke with him this morning and am very pleased to report that he is feeling strong and chipper. His heart enzymes have declined, so he has turned the corner. He is awaiting a dye test and an echo cardiogram. This will probably occur today or Wednesday, as July 1 is a national holiday in Canada.
He does not presently have access to a public phone or computer, but will reply to email messages when he returns home in a few days. Please do not call his home. Well wishers can send cards to Stan at P.O. Box 958, Houlton, ME 04730. He appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers."
Now this is definitely a bummer as hearing Stan talk is really something else (and moderating a panel last year at the festival with him, Jesse Marcel, Jr., Don Schmitt and Tom Carey was a highlight) but the 80-year-old nuclear physicist is a tough cookie. Stay tuned for updates on Stan, and go ahead and send those well wishes.

And if you'll be at the Roswell UFO Festival, you can still pick up Stan's book at Marden's table.

Get well soon, Stan!

UFO Does a Fly By Over an Argentinian Soccer Match?

Courtesy YouTube
What the heck is going on in South America during soccer games? Last week we reported on a mysterious "ghost" running through a stadium and now we have a video of a unidentified flying object soaring over a game in Argentina.

The report is thanks to Inexplicata: The Journal of Hispanic Ufology via Unexplained Mysteries and they write that the occurrence was over the San Lorenzo Stadium "during the last game against Botafogo for the Libertadores de America Cup, ending in a 3-0 victory by San Lorenzo." Good to at least know who won. The crowd was simply cheering for the game but the chanting was a bit reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind so you never know!

The anomaly moves left to right in an odd and rapid fashion and the video slows it down and enhances the image so you can take a better look and judge for yourselves. Is it a UFO? Well yes because it's not identified as anything specifically from our world, yet, but we'd love your opinion on what it might be. A hoax? A new type of experimental aircraft? A soccer superfan from Mars? Mothra? Let us know if we should start making tinfoil hats or if it's simply something of this world.

Purported UFO Abductee Stan Romanek Arrested For Child Porn Distribution

Self-proclaimed alien abductee Stanley Romanek was arrested in Colorado last week for alleged child pornography possession and distribution.

The 51-year-old Romanek, a well-known personality in the paranormal community, was arrested on felony charges of sexual exploitation of a child, reports the Reporter-Herald. The arrest warrant was issued Wednesday, Feb. 12 and Romanek turned himself in the following morning. The police report (shown here, with address redacted) reveals the arrest was the result of an eight-month long investigation based on tips provided by the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest follows a search warrant for Romanek's computer served in April 2013. He was released Thursday on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.

Romanek, a Loveland, Colo. resident, is known for claims he was the victim of alien abduction, as well as the target of alien experimentation, implants and telepathic communication. He has also released what he said is video evidence, the controversial "Boo Video," which allegedly shows an an alien looking through a window into Romanek's kitchen. Though Romanek's claims begin in 2000, it was his appearance with the Boo Video on Larry King Live in 2003 that garnered him national attention. He has since appeared on ABC Primetime and Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, as well as at numerous UFO conferences.

On her Facebook page, Romanek's wife Lisa stated he cannot access the Internet as a condition of his release, and his Facebook page has since been deleted. Lisa Romanek also said it is her husband's and her belief that their computer has been the focus of "harrassment, break-ins, hacking and remote access" and that "whoever has been accessing our system also left behind traces to verify the Office of Homeland Security tip that the police department received."

Speaking on behalf of her husband, Lisa Romanek further stated, "We will be taking UFOlogy into the courtroom. We know that this has EVERTING [sic]... to do with our being outspoken about the ET/UFO reality!"

The UFO-Man Lands on VICE

A brand new short video up on VICE.com in their Fringes series tells the tale of a small town man with an out of this world plan. VICE spent an afternoon with this colorful character and the episode is called "The Ambassador." It's quite a trip.

Jody Pendarvis is a resident of Bowman, South Carolina and he is the self-proclaimed UFO-Man. He has built quite the amazing and sturdy UFO Welcome Center too. In addition to being the UFO-Man, he also refers to himself as “The Ambassador” and the Captain of the decoy ship he built. When the aliens (from another planet, not this one) arrive, his status as Captain gives him the ability to communicate with them and it will all be top secret.

The Welcome Center was built in 1994 and since then, he’s run for Mayor thrice and has accumulated seven girlfriends. One he describes as “might be a crackhead” and "one is a hooker." Other than that, two or three are “really great in bed.” We get to meet number four but it’s unclear how she performs in the boudoir. She merely says that she needs to try harder. Her name? No idea.

So, anyway, just check out the video for yourselves and let us know your thoughts on the validity of Jody’s claims. We guarantee you some laughs. There’s no doubt his passion for aliens (and the ladies) is infectious.

Google doodles with Roswell

To commemorate the July 7 66th Anniversary of the UFO incident at Roswell, New Mexico, Google has a really cool Doodle for us. It takes us back to 1947 and enlists our help to get a little alien back to it’s downed ship.

You direct the ET around the ranch landscape and help it find objects that will help put its ship back together. It takes some skill so don’t get discouraged. Kidding! It’s fairly easy but fun enough to keep you interested.

You’ll need to find objects that assist little gray, including; a gasoline can with a “radioactive” symbol on it that gives you extra power, a feather, and a rope. Once you’ve attained all the objects, the ET goes home and a newspaper appears depicting the Roswell incident. Click on it to learn more about that history-changing event in the desert.

Despite happening in 1947, it really didn’t receive major attention until 1978 when Canadian ufologist Stanton Friedman started doing research and interviews with witnesses.

CON!!! 10 lesser known fan events to go crazy for

Dragon*Con, where the cosplayers
are real troopers. Courtesy Aaron Sagers
[Editor's note: Kenney Myers is a Texas-based entrepreneur, father, blogger and a guy who enjoys coming up with fun lists. We all know about the famous conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, but Kenney wanted to explore some of the lesser-known ones. We welcome him to Paranormal Pop Culture, but you can check out more of his work at KenneyMyers.com]

BY KENNEY MYERS

When it comes to fan conventions, it’s not always easy to find the baseline for what’s considered "bizarre."

One of the common elements between most fan conventions is that they’re all a bit strange in their own ways. There are, however, a few conventions that rise above their brethren in terms of strangeness and set the bizarre-bar a bit higher by simply existing.

Dragon*Con
When it comes to fan conventions specializing in the bizarre, very few enjoy the staggering attendance that’s par for the Dragon*Con course. Roughly 40,000 attendees flood to Atlanta each year for discussion panels and events celebrating everything from Gothic music to comic book culture and canceled science fiction television series. Cosplay is a big part of the event, so it’s not unusual to see obscure cartoon characters hanging out with Steampunk enthusiasts and elaborately costumed fairies.

UFO tries to fly 'Top Gun' at Air Base in Santiago

Around the same time audiences were watching James Franco cut off his arm at the movie theater, and Justin Beiber was about to win Artist of the Year at the 2010 American Music Awards, UFOs were stalking Chilean Jets at El Bosque Air Base in Santiago.

On Nov. 5, 2010, thanks to a crowd of smart phone users and advantageous videographers, an unidentified flying object was caught on film from several different angles as acrobatic and fighter jets were performing an air show overhead.

According to an article written by Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal entitled  'UFO Caught on Tape Over Santiago Air Base', posted on the Huffington Post, despite the fact that the "solid, metallic and luminous" flying object was photographed and videotaped from over six separate viewpoints weaving around the Chilean jets, "nobody saw anything amiss" until "an engineer from the adjacent Pillán aircraft factory noticed something bizarre while viewing his footage in slow motion."

Collection of UFO news coverage

This isn't particularly new, but it is a fascinating collection of local and national news coverage of UFO sightings. Obviously this doesn't prove anything one way or the other about the existence of otherworldly life, conspiracy theories, etc. However, it does prove that UFOs and little green men make for great colorful filler in news media.

Thanks to YouTube user Luckymauro for putting this together.

UFO 'rod' caught on video at NFL game?

Huffington Post's Lee Speigel serves up video footage of a possible UFO "rod" caught on video at the Oct. 23 NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts (remember the one where the score was 62-7?).

Anyhow, it's fairly interesting footage, but Speigel actually goes deeper by providing a thorough description of rod phenomena (which admittedly sounds like the name of a porn star) and speaks both with informed skeptics and believers. But one thing HuffPo doesn't discuss is how much it cost that UFO to attend the game. Are those technically skybox seats or just the super nosebleed section?

Aliens among us: An otherworldly season of pop

BY AARON SAGERS

Zombies I can deal with. They are hungry, relentless and aren’t immune to emotional vulnerabilities, but are dumb and slow witted, and a shotgun, axe or even a bat can dispatch them. Vampires aren’t too much of a concern since they seem mainly occupied with seducing females, acting morose and feeling threatened by werewolves. Speaking of werewolves, their threat level can be monitored via a lunar smartphone app and avoided by simply not wandering any moors just one night a month. Meanwhile ghosts moan a lot and throw stuff, but tend to be attached to old houses, videotapes and the occasional doll.

So what’s scarier than all four? After reading NASA researcher Richard B. Hoover’s Journal of Cosmology article last March, where he states he’s found fossils of bacterial life not native to Earth, the scariest threat out there could be one that can’t be dispatched simply with a shotgun, wooden stake, silver bullet or exorcism: aliens from another world.

On John Lennon's birthday: There's UFOs over New York ... again

John Lennon, NYC T-shirt, photo by Bob Gruen
"There's UFOs over New York and I ain't too surprised ..."

John Lennon wrote those words for the song "Nobody Told Me," which was released on his 1984 posthumous album Milk and Honey. The lyric was referring to a 1974 moment during his "Lost Weekend" (which was actually an 18-month period) when, in the East 52nd Street penthouse apartment he shared with his companion May Pang, he saw an unidentified, flying circular object hovering close to the terrace.  Lennon was naked when he saw it and excitedly called Pang out to be an eyewitness.

When Lennon's photographer Bob Gruen looked into it, he learned the Daily News and local precinct received other sightings that night in the same area of New York, and Lennon added this liner note to the Walls and Bridges album he was working on at the time: "On the 23rd August 1974 at 9 o'clock I saw a U.F.O. - J.L."

John Lennon was born on Oct. 9, 1940 and would have turned 70 last Saturday. The event was marked with celebrations around the world, including one organized by his widow Yoko Ono at the musician's Strawberry Fields memorial in Manhattan's Central Park.

Four days after crowds gathered to celebrate Lennon, UFOs were spotted hovering over New York City.

News outlets went wild with coverage. One popular theory, reported on by the good folks at Ghost Theory, points to a new book by retired NORAD officer Stanley A. Fullham that predicted aliens would appear over a major city on Oct. 13, 2010.

Nice prediction, eh? Not so much.  It turns out the UFOs may just have been children's balloons, or balloons from a Spanish Tourism event.

But honestly, although the "UFOs" were probably nothing from another world, I like my initial theory: That the aliens Lennon saw 36 years ago were popping back in to wish the Beatle a Happy Birthday, and to join in on the celebrations.
