Neil deGrasse Tyson: Is Earth a zoo for aliens?

Ever feel a little caged up, or like you're being watched? Do pellets of food mysteriously appear in front of you, compelling you to sit, stay, or speak? Don't worry, that may all just be because we're all exhibits in an elaborate zoo for aliens, according to Neil deGrasse Tyson.

As reported by Wired, at the Starmus conference in Tenerife, Spain, the celebrity astrophysicist Tyson said Earth could be a giant zoo for beings of higher intelligence. He added that maybe they were inflicting "weird politics" as a form of entertainment.

And maybe that's not so bad, he added. Responding to Stephen Hawking's statement last year that he believes aliens exists, but that we'd be in bad shape to contact them (not unlike the Native Americans were when they encountered Europeans), Tyson said, "I fear the day we come upon a species such as that."

He added: "Maybe I don’t fear it, I just hope that all they would do for us is create a zoo where we are happy. And maybe that is what they call Earth.”

Tyson went on to say that he sees the odds of humans discovering alien life to be extremely low, but if we did, we may not need worry about getting destroyed by a higher lifeform.

“A sufficiently intelligent civilisation would have positively no interest in us at all," he said. "In the same way as when you’re walking down a street and there’s a worm there.”. And even if you wanted to kill all the worms, he continued, you’d soon get bored and do something else. 

“Maybe our biggest protection against being killed by alien civilisations is their conclusion there’s no intelligent civilisation on Earth,” Tyson continued. “Suppose in fact intelligence has come to the galaxy. Who are we to then decide that we are intelligent? We define our intelligence. Of course we’re intelligent because we define it.” he said.

As Wired notes, SpaceX founder Elon Musk -- who, unlike Tyson and Hawking, is betting on putting humans on Mars in the near future -- said there was only a "one in a billion" chance we weren't living in a simulation.

In your bloody face: The potential of horror on VR

Virtual reality gaming (or "VR" as the cool kids say) is pretty much upon us, and that means that perhaps as soon as a few months from now we'll be looking at an entirely new form of in-home gaming entertainment.

No, VR headsets probably aren't replacing your PS4s and Xbox Ones (and, I guess, Wii Us), at least not in the early going, but they will be offering some incredibly exciting new experiences to get into. The fun part right now is figuring out what, exactly, those new experiences are going to look like!

More specifically, that means guessing at which genres of gaming will make the biggest impact on VR in the early days. One that gets a lot of attention is racing, mostly because of a few titles that have been announced. There's kind of an inherent value to a VR racing game in that it doesn't make you feel like you have to get up and walk around. In a VR shooter, one supposes, you'll feel a strong urge to take off running, ducking and tumbling. In a racing game you can be moving 130 mph without you needing to do anything but sit there, which seems pretty ideal for VR. An article by Jalopnik touched on this same idea while providing a few examples from existing racing simulators on VR, and frankly it all looks pretty great.

Another type of entertainment that's receiving a little less buzz but may also be ideally suited to VR is casino gaming. This is not just because casino games are inherently simple (at least in terms of graphics and gameplay), but also because existing digital casinos have already made leaps and bounds in approximating realistic experiences. At Gala's live casino, players can now choose to interact with, well, "live" dealers while playing games like blackjack, roulette, or Texas hold'em. That means that instead of cards simply appearing on your screen, a human being is facing you and interacting with you, dishing out cards and controlling the game. Cup your hands around your eyes and look ahead and it's almost VR already, so it's easy to imagine this sort of game thriving once the new headsets come out.

Aside from these clear picks to thrive on VR, it also seems absolutely inevitable that horror games will make their way to the new platform, and likely in spectacular fashion. And I don't actually say this because creepy and scary games have been popular on the best consoles for some time now. It's actually because of how similar games have thrived on mobile devices.

Mobile games require intriguing design and compelling atmosphere to really excel against their endless competition, and in a way this has helped some creepy experiences rise to the top of the heap. From Simogo's Year Walk to Phosphor Game Studio's Dark Meadow: The Pact, there are actually a lot of mobile gaming experiences for which it's commonly recommended that you turn off the lights and/or put in headphones! That's meant to be a way of fully immersing yourself in the spooky atmospheres these games present, and the result can be pretty genuinely unsettling. Basically, we've seen horror games move from those with scary storylines, dark areas and sudden dangers to experiences that make you feel like you're actually in a horrifying place.

And what could be more appealing for someone developing a new VR game? The whole point of this phenomenon is to take us out of our living rooms and basements and plop us into the environments of our video games. And that's not going to be more effective anywhere than it will be in horror. This is why it's such good news that there are already some intriguing VR horror games that have been announced.

We've still got a little ways to go before VR's takeover truly begins. The headset rollout is proving slow, and it's likely we won't see a particularly large selection of games for another year or two. But when the time comes, amazing horror experiences seem like a sure thing.

Just in time for Halloween, a follow up to 2014's Ouija gets some spooky origin action. But it's just a game, right?

Universal Pictures just released an official trailer for Ouija: Origin of Evil and something tells me little Doris is not into something good. It's got a cool 60s vibe and definitely looks creepy, so check it out below and let us know what you think. The film is scheduled for release on October 21.

When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Ouija: Origin of Evil is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Purge series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series), alongside Hasbro’s Brian Goldner (Transformers and G.I. Joe series) and Stephen Davis (Ouija). Mike Flanagan directs from a screenplay he wrote with his Oculus and Before I Wake collaborator, Jeff Howard, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.

Netflix's Stranger Things trailer channels '80s supernatural, Spielberg goodness

A recent article from The New York Times found Netflix viewers typically binge a series in chunks of about two hours a day, completing a season in a week or so. But by the looks of the original series Stranger Things, I might need even less time.

In the new trailer that dropped this week, Stranger Things appears to be a supernatural/sci-fi show that's part 1980s valentine and Spielbergian pastiche. And I need it in front of my eyeballs now. 

There's not a lot to decipher from the trailer -- which poses more questions than revealing the entire plot, thankfully -- but we know a young boy is being pursued by something (alien? monster? monster alien?) and goes missing. His mom (Winona Ryder!) appears to get no help from the local police. And when the boy returns, he's ... different. He may not be the only kid to be changed, either. 

What else do we see? Kids on bikes! Weird telekinetic trickery on lightbulbs! G-men in containment suits! 

Stranger Things comes courtesy writers/directors/co-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer, who also worked on Wayward Pines. I'm loving everything I'm seeing so far, and can't wait to binge this sucker when it drops July 15, 2016.

As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.

The Grudge, and The Ring ghosts open Japanese baseball game in perfectly bizarre stunt

Man, how I love the over-the-top bombastic of Japanese pop culture. I mean, we do stunts to promote movies in the States, but this is perfection.

To promote the upcoming crossover sequel Sadako vs Kayako, which pits the ghosts from The Ring (Ringu in the original version) and The Grudge (Ju-On), the J-horror icons had a, um, grudge-match at a recent baseball game between the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and Yakult Swallows.

In the clip below, Sadako enters the ring (I just did it again, didn't I?) and warms up to pitch against Kayako and the ghost child Toshio. It turns out that Kayako ain't a half bad player because she hits a homer. But, to be fair, Sadako did have her evil eyes covered as she pitched from the mound.

Bobby Brown Claims He Had Sex with a Ghost

In a recent interview with Robin Roberts for 20/20, musician and former Mr. Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, admits he had spectral intercourse. He's not the first celebrity who's admitted knocking boots with Casper; many have come forward with these encounters, including pop singer, Kesha.

Brown reveals in his upcoming memoir, "Every Little Step," that he had the encounter in Georgia, "I bought this mansion in Georgia ... this was a really, really spooky place. But yes, one time, I woke up, and yeah, a ghost. I was being mounted by a ghost."

Given his history of substance abuse, he cleared up that, "I wasn't high. I was not trippin'."

Of course Brown discusses his marriage to Whitney and how he had sex with Madonna and Janet Jackson, among other revelations. His memoir is out on June 13.

Jason Hawes announces end to Ghost Hunters on Syfy

Onto the next? Not on Syfy, at least. After more than 200 episodes, and nearly 14 years of seeking proof of the paranormal, Ghost Hunters will be ending its run on the network following Season 11, which premieres Aug. 3, according to its star.

The announcement came via show lead Jason Hawes’ Facebook page on Tuesday night.

In the post, Hawes said, "With heavy heart we want to inform everyone that we are choosing at this time to end our relationship with SyFy channel.”

He went on to write “We’ve been one of their top rated and top watched shows since TAPS and Pilgrim Films decided to join forces and create the show Ghost Hunters.”

He also added Ghost Hunters may return in another form: “There are some huge things in the works with TAPS, Ghost Hunters, Pilgrim Films and so much more.”

Debuting in 2004 on the erstwhile Sci-Fi Channel, the legacy of the docusoap, where a team of investigators (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) seek to debunk or affirm claims of ghostly activity cannot be ignored. The show was a hit for the network for a while, and at its peak, pulled about three million viewers per episode. It is heretofore Syfy’s longest-running series, and ushered in an era of similarly-themed reality-TV shows. But, the series, arguably with the exception of Travel Channel’s long-running Ghost Adventures, is the only one to truly become part of the pop culture lexicon and break through to the mainstream.

Co-founders, and original co-leads, Grant Wilson and Hawes (famously Roto-Rooter plumbers by day, busters by night) appeared on late night talk shows and The Today Show, and the series was spoofed on Saturday Night Live, and South Park. It spawned spinoffs, live episodes, merchandise, apps, and ghosthunting events at famously “haunted” landmarks. The Ghost Hunters lingo, and use of night vision cameras, and other gadgets, could also be felt throughout movies and scripted TV, such as Paranormal Activity, The Conjuring, and Supernatural, among others.

However, the end of the series comes as no surprise as Syfy has shifted away from the paranormal reality-TV craze and re-centered its focus on scripted science-fiction programming. And while still a solid performer for the network, Season 10 averaged 880,000 viewers with a peak of 1.15 million viewers.

As for the announcement itself, Hawes’ post suggests it was his and production company Pilgrim Films’ choice to wrap the show’s run on Syfy, instead of a call by the network. Thus far the network has not made a statement; it is, however, curious that Hawes would break the news ahead of Syfy publicity.

Regarding the promise for what’s ahead, it is possible the show could have a life elsewhere. For example, the Discovery Networks channel Destination America has shifted to a primarily paranormal programming slate. Plus, while it may not fit on Syfy any longer, the brand itself is strong enough (and relatively inexpensive to produce) that a streaming network looking for unscripted shows could conceivably swoop in and pick it up.

Speculation aside, the end of Ghost Hunters at Syfy is an end to an interesting era at the network. The existence of the paranormal may not have ever been conclusively proven on the show, but the series leaves behind evidence of a Syfy legacy.

If you have an extraordinary child (and who doesn't?), Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters might be the right place for him or her to hone their talents. Let's flashback to 1983 and this "commercial" for the special school, or maybe it's just a clever way to promote X-Men: Apocalypse? Yeah it's probably that.

New "Ghostbusters" Trailer Breaks a YouTube Record

Paul Feig's upcoming "Ghostbusters" movie has broken a YouTube record; officially becoming the most DISLIKED movie trailer in the history of the website. Released in March, the trailer currently has over 30 million views.

However, the video has received nearly 700,000 dislikes to a disproportionate (and paltry in comparison) 227,455 likes. It's by no means the most disliked video on YouTube, however. It currently sits at the 18th most disliked video overall. The first place honor belongs to Justin Beiber's tune, "Baby."

If you think that the trailer is only disliked by die-hard "Ghostbusters" fans, mansplainers or...me, you would be mistaken. Star of the film, Melissa McCarthy, isn't a fan of the trailer either.

"It's a reboot. It's weird that they said the '30 years ago' because in the movie the first ["Ghostbusters"] didn't happen. [...]The trailer said 30 years later, which I didn't get myself...believe me, the question was asked. I was like 'I think that's very confusing,' but then everyone said 'we don't care what you think,'" the actress stated on JohnJay and Rich.

Screen Gems gets into Slender Man movie business

According to ComicBook.com, Screen Gems is developing a Slender Man movie based on a script by David Birke for a 2017 release.

The Internet horror creation, and modern urban legend, emerged on the Something Awful forum, and is the most famous of the creepypasta stories out there. Although created by Eric Knudsen, aka "Victor Surge," Slender Man has many roots in folklore and pop culture (See: The Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and The Silence from Doctor Who).

While there is more news to come, Screen Gems has a strong track record of success with its previous films The Mothman Prophecies, Boogeyman, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Hostel, and the Resident Evil and Underworld franchises.

Robert Kirkman apologizes for The Walking Dead finale

If you felt a little ripped off by the Season 6 finale of The Walking Dead -- you know, the one where they were building to the introduction of Negan, and the death of a major character, but cut to credits without showing Who. The. Hell. Died! -- well, creator Robert Kirkman has heard your cries.

As reported by Blastr, Kirkman addresses the situation in the letters page of Issue #154 of the comic. He apologizes for dicking fans around -- sort of. He also says the finale cliffhanger leading to next fall's Season 7 premiere was a success, and basically pulled what Star Trek: The Next Generation did every season.

Someone with a better knowledge of Star Trek should fact check that one, because I'm not quite certain I buy it.

Meet Rose Mackenberg, Harry Houdini's personal ghost buster

I'm a big fan of Harry Houdini, and his exploits to root out fraud in paranormal scenes. His work as a debunker has gained some mainstream attention via movies, but did you know that ol' Harry had his own secret service with some spirited squad goals?

Yup, Houdini had a group of 20 salaried undercover investigators who traveled the country in the early 1900s with the mission of uncovering "ghost racketeers" engaged in "spirit fraud."

Perhaps the most famous was Rose Mackenberg, the "Spook Spy." A New York City resident, Rose was a believer in Spiritualism early on, before she teamed up with the illusionist. Once she did, Houdini was especially impressed by Rose's skills and knowledge of fakery involved in seances and mediumship.

The Spook Spy earned her name by slipping into the confidences of local spiritualist groups. And when she arrived in town, she'd go shopping for new disguises that would allow her to blend into a local area. Disguises included "Credulous Servant Girl," "Believing Semi-Invalid," "Smartly Garbed Widow," "Rustic School Teacher," and "Small Town Matron," among others.

Although Houdini died in 1926, Rose continued with her and her boss' mission through 1951. She also gave lectures, wrote for multiple publications such as Popular Science, assisted insurance companies in sussing out fraudulent claims, and worked with the Chicago Tribune as a guide to the Spiritualist world.

'The Omen' is Getting a Prequel

Look how happy little Damien is to be getting a prequel!

Look at me, Damien! It's all for you!

On June 25, 1976, we were introduced to a cherubic little scamp named Damien, in the Richard Donner-directed, The Omen. Sure Damien was a receptacle for evil, but he wiggled his way into our souls. There were sequels, a remake in 2006, books, and now a TV show on Fox bearing his name. But what happened before the original? According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, a prequel is in the works to head to a theater near you.

From THR, "Antonio Campos, the indie filmmaker who most recently directed the Sundance movie Christine, is in negotiations to helm the supernatural horror thriller titled The First Omen, which is being produced by David Goyer and his Phantom Four banner." The prequel is being written by Ben Jacoby.

There is no word on when we can expect to see what happens before all the hell broke loose but we'll keep you posted.

'Face Off' Recap: 'Sinister Showdown Part II'

Here we go, the second half of the Season 10 finale. Right now Team Walter is cruising through this horror movie challenge with Team Melissa and Team Rob needing a lot redesign work. Can Melissa keep her team focused? Can Rob resist the urge to throw the sculpey at Director Bryce? Can Walter continue to guide his team to movie magic? A winner will be crowned at the end of the night so let's do this.

After the screen tests they head back to the lab where they get a pick-me-up from surprise family visits. They are all so darn adorable! Okay, enough fun and smiles, back to work people. Team Walter can keep moving forward, not having to redo anything which is a really good position to be in. Melissa and Rob have a lot of work to (re)do but they're focused and in it to win it.

'Face Off' Recap: 'Sinister Showdown Part 1'

Well y'all, here we are. The finale of Face Off's tenth season. Mel fell just short leaving us with Melissa, Rob, and Walter as this season's three finalists. Before this challenge is done, they'll all be thinking fondly of The Gauntlet. Saddle up and buckle in, it's a two-parter so let's do this.

Field trip! Off to the abandoned oil fields for thrills, chills, and big scares. Producer Jason Blum gives them their marching directions: they will each create two make ups to feature in a horror film based off of one of Jason's short horror stories about a family who moves into a house that contains a portal to hell and unleashes a demon. This is why fixer-uppers are never a good idea. Each finalist will work with a different director who has his own story-board and script and will bring the demon unlucky family member to cinematic life: Bryce McGuire, Ryan Spindell, and John Wynn. It's a lot of work but don't worry, we've brought in some help in the forms of Johnny, Anna, Mel, Yvonne, Kaleb, and Robert.

Mel struggled last week with her Cyclops but in a surprise twist, the judges decided to bestow upon her the super-special save, allowing her to remain in the competition. There are no more second chances to be had for anyone now so the artists better be ready to bring it. It's on like Leroy Jenkins. Everyone ready? Let's do this.

Welcome to the World of Warcraft! WooHoo! To the non-surprise of all, there is an upcoming WoW feature film so naturally a tie-in is required. The film will feature humans versus orcs so the five remaining artists will adapt one of other six races to a more badass version suitable for the film: Goblin, Draenei, Pandaren, Tauren, Troll, or Worgen. Walter, Melissa, and Rob just about pass out from sheer gamer joy while Mel looks about ready to cry because war-what? Don't worry Mel, Chris Robinson, the Senior Art Director for 'World of Warcraft' is on hand to dispense some character advice.

Rob - Tauren. A man-bull warrior race.

Mel - Troll. They have magic and voodoo and she has a lot of questions.

Yvonne - Goblin, They're snarky and like explosions.

Walter - Dreanei. Not a zombie, just undead. Um, okay.

Melissa - Worgen. She decides on a wolf/cat/high priest-druid... thing. Sure. We'll go with that.

'Face Off' Recap: 'Keep One Eye Open'

Last week, we saw the end of Robert and his magical menagerie's run and we're all sadder for it, but Walter and Rob are peaking. Will the guys cruise to victory? We're in the home stretch now with only five remaining so, everyone ready? Let's do this.

Welcome to the apothecary! Oh, I hope they have a bezoar. Melissa's excited at least. Their challenge is to delve into Greek mythology, specifically the Cyclops. Each will pick an eye that will inspire their Cyclops. Oh yeah, and this is a focus challenge so, you know, focus on the face. We'll give you a little help though - really, really tall models. And a step stool.

Design
Yvonne - Satan's blacksmith. She's never done a Cyclops before so drink.
Rob - Electric Blue with aquatic pupil. He forged Poseidon's trident.
Mel - human eyeball. She's going with a human/dog hybrid and this just won't end well.
Melissa - Lizard Snake Monster Warrior. She has no real theme but is basing the sculpt on an eyelash viper. No theme, except for BADASS that is.

The struggle was real for Anna as she was eliminated and Robert lived to be adorable another day. Hopefully he'll have learned from his most recent near-miss and take things a bit more seriously now. We're down to the top six and the margin for error is razor-thin. Going for 'safe' is no longer enough. Y'all ready? Let's do this.

Entering the lab, the top six are greeted by wings. Angels are not among us but Valkyries certainly are. Today's foundation challenge is rooted in Norse mythology and they will be creating Valkyrie goddess makeup. The guest judge is Douglas Noe and he's looking for stylized elements with bold shapes and angles, dramatic color but not flamboyant or garish. The winner gets immunity, a luxury that cannot be overstated at this stage of the competition. You have two hours; choose your wings and go!
