Comcast Acquires FEARNET

According to Deadline, the horror-themed channel, VOD service and website, FEARNET, has been bought out by Comcast. They report, "Comcast has bought out its partners in the joint venture — Sony Pictures Entertainment and Lionsgate Entertainment — to take 100% ownership. Following the transaction, which closed this morning, FEARnet will no longer be a stand-alone brand but will be folded into Comcast’s NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment division."

A spokesman for the company told Deadline yesterday, “NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment has acquired all remaining interests in FEARnet from its productive venture with Lionsgate and Sony. FEARnet, along with its popular content, will be integrated into NBCU Cable Entertainment. This process will take place over a yet to be determined period of time.”

The plan is for FEARNET "to be folded mainly into Comcast/NBCU Cable Entertainment’s similarly thriller, suspense and horror-focused Chiller, though some content could also migrate to Syfy." Launched in 2006 on Halloween as a three-way partnership between Comcast, Lionsgate and Sony, Deadline's source heard that "Lionsgate and Sony ultimately opted to monetize their minority stakes in what had been a noncore asset for them rather than continuing."

As stated, this is a process that will take time. We'll keep you posted on any new developments.

FEARNET'S March Lineup Features Hollywood All-Stars

March Madness is just around the corner and no, we're not talking about basketball. FEARNET recently released their March lineup of films that features not one but two big Hollywood stars, including Jeremy Renner ("The Avengers") in "Dahmer" and 2014 Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender ("12 Years A Slave") in "Eden Lake." FEARNET will also be presenting premieres of Neil Marshall’s "Dog Soldiers;" Country Icon Trace Adkins in "Trailer Park of Terror;" Dana Delany in "Camp Hell;" and Nick Cannon in "Day of the Dead."

But wait! There's more! The announcement reveals that FEARNET will put a delightfully horrifying spin on March Madness by unleashing a "sinister sixteen 'Monster Madness' interactive Facebook bracket to coincide with the NCAA’s Sweet 16." Refereed by the Crypt Keeper, the competition features a roster of classic genre icons and modern favorites against each other. Fans will vote to decide who will make the final cut. First-round matches feature Pumpkinhead vs. Pyramid Head ("Silent Hill"); Chucky vs. Leprechaun; Gremlins vs. Critters; Reagan ("The Exorcist") vs. Mia ("Evil Dead"); Alcide ("True Blood") vs. David ("An American Werewolf in London"); Bela Lugosi’s Dracula vs. Max Schreck’s Nosferatu; Freddy Krueger vs. Michael Myers; and Jason Voorhees vs. Ghost Face ("Scream").

FEARNET.com Opens 'The Vault' and Begins Streaming Uncut Horror Classics

Starting this Thursday, January 23 and running through until Thursday, March 27, FEARNET.com is bringing fans of horror the ultimate grindhouse experience. They're opening The Vault and bringing some of the biggest names in the genre into your homes by highlighting 10 free-to-view films from filmmakers Dario Argento, George Romero, Lucio Fulci, William Lustig, and Gary Sherman. A new film will be uploaded each week so you could not only enjoy the films at home, but also when you're on the road.

Launching today, you might notice something a bit different about the highly recognizable FEARNET splat logo. Their bigger and bolder brand refresh is announced via press release, "FEARNET is shedding its skin, unveiling a new network package that modernizes its former cinematic look into a multi-faceted, artful television brand, reflecting the type of diverse, genre-bending programming that FEARNET delivers."

Notice FEARNET is in all caps too?

Some what else could we expect from the horror-centric channel? The release promises that the enhancements are "...just the beginning of a brand evolution that will continue through 2014, affecting all aspects of the company’s marketing efforts for its linear TV channel, video on demand services, affiliate communication and Industry-leading website, FEARNET.com."

FEARnet's December Programming Schedule

FEARnet’s December to Dismember programming schedule kicked off the month with their premiere of “Army of Darkness” and keeps on giving all December long. In addition, other premieres include: “Anaconda”, “The Messengers”, a “Silent Night, Deadly Night” Trilogy, and the World Television Premiere of “Donner Pass.”

After Christmas, they encourage you to indulge during their four-day “Holiday Buffet,” From December 26-29, when they offer, “Monster Portions of FEARnet Favorites Such As ‘Holliston’, ‘Todd & The Book of Pure Evil’, and ‘Fear Clinic.’”

This Thanksgiving, Watch FEARnet's Broadcast Premiere of 'The Human Centipede'

Leave it to our friends at FEARnet to make up for the lack of Thanksgiving horror films. They managed to cook up a scientific abomination that would delight the likes of Dr. Josef Heiter! They've created a delicious turducken to celebrate their broadcast premiere of "The Human Centipede" on Thanksgiving night.

Here's a little taste of the film, thanks to IMDB:

A mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a new "pet"-- a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums.

What a perfect way to end your Thanksgiving holiday! Oh come on, we're just being tongue-in-cheek.

The movie will air on FEARnet this Thursday, November 28 at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.

'Insidious' to Premiere on FEARnet this September 8

Thanks to FEARnet acquiring the broadcast premiere rights, the network will air James Wan's 2011 horror hit, Insidious, on September 8 at 8 p.m. ET.

Starring Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) and Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Insidious will also be available on VOD starting Wednesday, September 11.

Insidious introduces audiences to Josh (Wilson) and Renai Lambert (Byrne). After a mysterious incident in the attic, their son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), falls into a coma. The family's situation declines as Dalton's illness results in terrifying encounters with malevolent ghouls, and a journey into the realm of the dead known as “The Further.”

Wan enjoyed great success this past weekend with The Conjuring, (it topped the box office with $41.5 million), and with his September 13 release of FilmDistrict’s Insidious: Chapter 2 (in which Wilson, Byrne, and Simpkins will reprise their roles), the network is excited to showcase his work.

In a press release statement from Sarah Shannon, FEARnet’s Vice President of Programming and Network Operations, "As a Network, we are big fans of James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s work, so we’re very excited to add Insidious to the FEARnet lineup. It’s a true testament to the filmmakers that they can take a PG13 movie, and build this amazingly creepy aura that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.”

FEARnet announces July programming

Want a slice of what’s in store on FEARnet for July? World premieres, marathons and even a contest
splatter their schedule as the temps heat up.

The month is headlined on Saturday, July 20 by the world premiere of the Israeli thriller, Blood Clan (a.k.a. Rabies) at 10 p.m. ET. The celebrated film, which is part of the network’s “Tour De La Terror,” “weaves a twisted web around a group of young tennis players, a ranger and his dog, and a troop of policemen, whose lives become entangled with a brother and sister, after the girl falls in to a psychopath’s trap.”

Following Blood Clan at midnight is the French shocker Frontiere(s) in which a family of cannibalistic Nazis terrorize a gang of thieves. Can you handle even more terror? Then check out the J-Horror classic about the mystery of a cursed video tape that inspired The Ring, Ringu airs at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.

Interview: Adam Green On 'Holliston' Season Two Premiere

It feels like a classic opening setup for most sitcoms: Buddies Adam and Joe bicker as they rush to prepare the big anniversary dinner double-date before the girls arrive. The laugh track responds in kind to the buffoonery. That’s when the blood starts to spill. Fingers are cut to the bone, faces are melted off, a corkscrew screws a Corri -- then there’s a bad banana cream pie incident. And still the laugh track responds, growing in a maniacal intensity.

Such is the set up for Holliston, FEARnet’s comedy that is something of a Big Bang Theory for horror nerds.

Created and starring director Adam Green (Frozen, Hatchet, Hatchet II, Chillerama), the show plays with situational comedy conventions but turns them on a decapitated head by introducing gore and scary movie tropes, such as in the scene described above. Holliston, which has its second season premiere tonight at 10 p.m., also stars director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, the much-anticipated Knights of Badassdom), as well as Corri English and Laura Ortiz. Oh yeah, and then there’s Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider as Adam and Joe’s boss and GWAR’s Oderus Urungus who is Adam’s imaginary friend, Oderus.

The show revolves primarily around Adam and Joe’s attempt to get their zombie soccer movie Shinpads made whilst working as horror-show hosts as a low-rent local cable company, and during their adventures, a rogues gallery of scary movie icons appear as skewed versions of themselves. For instance, in the Season Two premiere, the imposing Kane Hodder (the Hatchet series and Friday the 13th parts 7-10) appears as a sensitive and precious actor who attempts suicide when he hears he’s been replaced as Jason Voorhees.

Granted, a segment of the population may not know who Hodder is or, for that matter, other guest stars such as Danielle Harris, Tony Todd and Derek Mears. Hopefully they at least know who John Landis is, but that’s not what Holliston is going for. Loaded with horror movie quotations and background Easter Eggs from the genre, there is a sense that if you get it, you’re one of “us,” but if not, well … you really won’t get it.

'Reaper' reunion airs tonight on FEARnet

We were thrilled to hear FEARnet would be re-airing the cancelled-too-soon cult hit Reaper starting on June
4 at 9 p.m. ET. We were also tickled to learn of a reunion special featuring the cast.

According to a press release, the Reaper cast reassembled on April 24 to film the half-hour reunion special that will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET on FEARnet.

The special is hosted by web personality Angie Greenup and will feature series stars Ray Wise, Tyler Labine and Bret Harrison, as well as Rick Gonzalez, Ken Marino, Christine Willes.

Also from the release, series creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas will appear and share some insider info such as, “that comedic icon Louis C.K. originally auditioned for the part of the Devil; and whether or not the team would be open to a Kickstarter campaign to resurrect REAPER, are just a few of the things fans can expect to glean from the special.”

FEARnet gets into a 'Battle Royale' with May

It's May, and if the weird weather we've been having isn't enough to scare you, horror network FEARnet is kicking off their summer programming with some killer shows and thrilling offerings including an airing of the uncut version of Battle Royale. They are also urging fans of Tales From the Crypt to not miss their last chance to watch classic episodes before they head back to the grave on May 17.

Battle Royale is a 2000 film that has never been aired on television and FEARnet will be showing the uncut version at 10 p.m. ET on May 18. Dubbed as one on Japan’s most famous films and a favorite of Quentin Tarantino (and some say a better version of The Hunger Games than The Hunger Games) the uber-violent film is centered around ninth grade students on a field trip from hell. The students are gassed and awakened on a remote island where they are instructed by government law to kill each other. Apparently, it’s their way of managing out-of-control students.

FEARnet revives 'Reaper'

Were you a fan of The CW comedy Reaper when it aired from 2007-09, and felt like it got short shrift when it was canceled? You are not alone. The show aired two seasons and was developing a nerd following but died before its time.

And now it is coming back -- sorta.

Horror network FEARnet has licensed both seasons of the hour-long series for a complete 31 episode order. It will return June 4 at 9 p.m. ET for its Tuesday night Twisted Comedy Block. The show will serve as lead-in for the second season of the FEARnet original half-hour comedy series, Holliston that airs at 10 p.m. ET the same night

Sort of like a supernatural Chuck, the show focuses college drop-out, and big-box electronic store employee Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison) who must work as a bounty hunter for the Devil (Ray Wise). As part of a deal made many years ago, Sam’s parents offered up their firstborn son in exchange for good health for the ailing father. Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) play Sam’s slacker friend who helps him 'reap' escaped souls from Hell using a Dirt Devil vacuum.

Not only is FEARnet reviving the show, it is also producing a half-hour reunion special that will reunite a few of the original crew and cast members including Harrison, Labine and Wise (The Devil). They’ll discuss the popularity of Reaper and its finale in round-table format.

FEARnet unleashes March madness scheduling

March: The month that conjures up images of lions, lambs, leprechauns, and to some... madness! Of course, we here at PPC are not referring to basketball when it comes to madness but good, ol' scares.

Thanks to the programming over at the horror, thriller, and suspense channel FEARnet, we’re guaranteed some delicious madness this March. According to a recent press release, they’ll be offering an "all-star roster loaded with haunted houses, evil arms, vampires, slashers and Jigsaw!”

The programming includes "Mangled Madness" and "Cowboys & Critters" marathon on March 14 and 28, respectively, along with world TV premieres of The Selling and Holla (March 24 & 31). But the "Saw Sunday Stunt" on March 9, which includes Saw VI and Saw VII, will be a solid draw for the network.

ABC returns to paranormal programming with 'Gothica'

Despite their recent failure with the Faustian drama 666 Park Avenue, ABC is not giving up on the notion that paranormal shows are hot. Casting has begun on the new soapy-style para-drama called Gothica. This show will have some of literary history’s classic spooky characters, namely Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Count Dracula, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

It sounds kind of like a horror-themed League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, actually.

Anyhow, our friends over at FEARnet got the scoop on the show’s premise and who will be playing some key roles. The show is set in modern times but the characters are tied together in some interesting ways. For example, Dr. Frankenstein, who will be played by Tom Ellis (The Fades, Merlin), "runs a hospital with a biotech research department which Dr. Frankenstein uses to develop a way to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life. Victor was once romantically involved with Grace Van Helsing."

Oscar Wilde’s creation, Dorian Gray (Chris Egan of Resident Evil: Extinction) is described by The Hollywood Reporter as "a beautifully charming and devastatingly sexy man with a smile like a switchblade. He's an enigmatic playboy who develops a relationship with Grace Van Helsing and attempts to help her figure out who killed her family."

The pilot will be written by Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), who will co-executive produce with Mark Gordon, and is scheduled to be filmed in Montreal. We’ll keep you posted on when it will air.

FEARnet announces shorts programming

FEARnet.com is being extra generous this season. According to a recent press release, the website companion to the horror network will be premiere more than 30 genre-centric short films in 2013, treating viewers to an eclectic blend of festival favorites, international picks, rarely-seen gems and more. New titles began appearing Jan. 21, and will continue to be added every other week.

The "more" they’re referring just may be the new episodes of the popular and completely adorable "30-Second Bunnies Theater" which are made specifically for FEARnet by horror fan Jennifer Shiman. Shiman began making these short films back in 2004 and reports that, "The idea of bunnies came about because I wanted to find a character that would lend itself to a short film synopsis."

Fans of the little critters can expect to see them in re-imaginings of the popular horror flicks Insidious, The Last Exorcism and The Human Centipede. The first one, Paranormal Activity, debuted Jan. 28. (You can even like the bunnies on Facebook)!

According to the release, here are some other highlights:

"I Love Sarah Jane"
Jimbo is desperately in love with Sarah Jane (Mia Wasikowska, Alice In Wonderland), and will do anything to be with her. But this isn’t your typical romantic comedy. Jimbo and Sarah Jane live in a post-apocalyptic world infested by zombies, in this offbeat short written and directed by Hesher helmer Spencer Susser.

"Sexy Nightmare Slayers"
Two sexy angels have been sent to earth to protect children from the beasts under their beds and the boogiemen in their closets. Team Unicorn presents this short created by Adam Green (Holliston) and Rileah Vanderbilt (Hatchet III), who also stars in it.

"Him Indoors"
Reece Shearsmith (Psychoville) stars in this darkly comedic horror short about an agoraphobic serial killer named Gregory. On the verge of eviction, he devises the perfect plan to save his home. But things are complicated by the arrival of a new neighbor.

"Say It Ain't Solo"
When a father and son hear that their favorite film, Star Wars, is the latest classic to be remade, they set out on a quest to put a stop to it. This star-filled short features appearances by Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Wrong Turn), Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future), Malin Åkerman (Watchmen) and Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds).

"Follow The Sun"
"Popcorn for eternity! Hell’s on its way!" The Kansas City-based MK12 collective presents this deranged take on nostalgic movie snack intermission ads that has been a celebrated hit in its screenings at Fantastic Fest, Mile High, and Slamdance.

FEARnet announces holiday 'Holliston,' 'Tales From The Crypt'

FEARnet isn’t just a channel to indulge in at Halloween, they also like to get into the spirit of Yule! They’ve announced their HoHoHo-rifically awesome holiday line-up and promise a sack full of screams.

Among the highlights are a Holliston marathon and Christmas special, Christmas Eve "Killer Kringle" marathon and a New Year's Eve Tales from the Crypt marathon.

First up is a marathon of the horror-nerd sitcom Holliston,beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. Starring director Adam Green and Joe Lynch, the show revolves around the aspiring genre filmmakers as they deal with romance and run-ins with horror legends Kane Hodder, Tony Todd and John Landis - not to mention GWAR's Oderus Urungus and Dee Snider. Then, at 8 p.m., is the Holliston Christmas Special.

Says a FEARnet press release, "the most wonderful time of the year quickly turns into 'Black Christmas,' when a blizzard strikes the town of Holliston, trapping Adam, Joe, Corri and Laura inside with no power. Of course, being a horror sitcom, it makes sense that a "crazed serial killer" is loose in the area, which interrupts the gangs reminiscing about their time together. Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, Community) guests.

Then, the Christmas Eve "Killer Kringle" marathon begins at noon ET with the promise that "Santa Claus is comin’ to town… and he’s out for blood in a four-film frightfest "dedicated to the not-so-nice side of Old St. Nick." The programming block includes The Traveler, starring Val Kilmer, about a stranger with a secret. Then there's Santa's Slay, about Santa (aka the Son of Satan) whose deal with an angel to play nice for a 1,000 years is up. Up next is Saint, a Dutch flick about a really pissed off Santa. Finally the Spanish movie A Christmas Tale involves a captured woman in a Santa suit who decides to seek revenge against her captors.

And on New Year's Eve, if you're not into The Twilight Zone marathon on Syfy, check out the Tales from the Crypt one. Beginning at 4 p.m. ET, the marathon is hosted by The CryptKeeper, with his first new appearances in 15 years. The 24 episodes include many great classic Crypt eps, including "Dead Wait" ( 8:30 p.m. ET) and "Yellow," (2:30 a.m. ET) but none more appropriate than "And All Through The House," about a "murderous woman terrorized by a maniacal Santa Claus" (6:30 p.m. ET).

FEARnet explores big business of scares, Halloween and beyond

In one of the most extensive studies on Halloween and the horror genre, research from cable network and website FEARnet shows the entire country has been overtaken by Oct. 31 fever - with the business of scary becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry.

According to the study (the graphic for which, left, is embiggenable), in 2011, Halloween-related spending "neared 7 billion dollars; up from 3.29 billion dollars in 2005." What's more, the research revealed that most people will spend, on average, $72 on costumes, candy and decorations. And you know those pop-up Halloween stores that overtake mini-malls each season? There will be an estimated 15,000 of them to choose from. Additionally, there will be a potential 41 million trick-or-treaters, and costume sales for them will drum about a billion bucks. Costumes for adults will rake in about $1.2 billion. The outfits for Fido, Tabby and the nation's pets will generate $310 million. On the candy front, the sweets industry makes more during Halloween - about 23 percent of its annual sales - than in any other season.

All these numbers add up to what horror nerds have instinctively known for years: Scary is a lifestyle.

"That’s why it surprises me that more people don’t realize that this genre isn’t just a Halloween business," said Peter Block, president and general manager of FEARnet (and former President of Acquistions & Co-Productions at Lionsgate). "There’s a reason adults spend so much money on costumes each year; We want to revisit what we loved as children."

That desire extends to about 44 percent of people choosing to dress in costume each year, and 23% planning to visit one of more than 300 haunted house attractions at theme parks, historic sites, zoos, etc. - and generating upwards of $200 million annually for those venues.

"This genre is a passion, and there’s no on/off switch for people’s passions—it doesn’t just start up during October and fade away once November arrives," Block said.

"There’s a constant thirst for it," he added. "People love being scared, and they love being scared together ... We’re seeing this addressed more and more, especially on TV, where just about every network has a genre show."

Block's point is a good one. On the television front, season three of AMC's zombie drama The Walking Dead bowed to about 11 million viewers when it debuted Oct. 14. Then there are other horror-themed shows like Grimm, 666 Park Avenue, American Horror Story, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Dexter, all of which command dedicated fan bases. And more horror series like The Following and Hannibal are on the way.

Within the film community, the Halloween spirit continues beyond Oct. 31 as well.

Last year's Paranormal Activity 3 opened with $53 million in its first weekend. That made it the biggest October opening ever, and contributed to the $3.3 billion that the horror/thriller/suspense genre earned in 2011. According to the FEARnet research, January 2012's The Devil Inside had the third biggest opening in history for that month, and the Saw films, the top-grossing horror franchise, has earned $873 million.

Block acknowledged that horror has traditionally been a genre that many advertisers have stayed away from, but that, "right now, it’s something to be embraced, and advertising is beginning to reflect this."

"At the end of the day, advertisers are always going to go where the eyeballs are," he said.

The month horror fans wait for all year is finally here! October tends to be filled with spooktacular programming on other channels, but at FEARnet, they deliver the goods 12 months straight. So, when October arrives, they really need to ramp up their game.

According to a recent press release, "This is the only time of year that other networks concentrate on the horror realm, while we do this all year long," said Sarah Shannon, FEARnet’s director of programming. "So, we put together a schedule that stands out—a monthlong bender of some of the best programming we’ve ever had and some of the best features we’ve ever aired. From the world premieres of Quarantine 2 and Dolan’s Cadillac, to acquired classic TV shows like Tales from the Crypt and The Real Ghostbusters, there will always be something for fans to watch. Not just all month long, but all year long."

FEARnet re-opens vault of horror with 'Tales from the Crypt'

It is a happy day for horror fans because the Cryptkeeper is heading to cable network FEARnet. All 93 episodes from Tales from the Crypt, the horror anthology that ran on HBO from 1989 to 1996, will be aired in linear order beginning Oct. 5, 10 p.m.

The episodes will be be edited for for content, but the original, unedited episodes of the fan-favorite show will be presented on its VOD platform, where four episodes will be added every Wednesday.

Based on the EC horror/crime comics, Tales from the Crypt featured recognizable faces such as Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig; it also included executive producers such as Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon), Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump), David Giler (Prometheus)  and Joel Silver (Die Hard, Matrix and Sherlock Holmes).

Said Silver, in a press release, "We’re incredibly pleased that FEARnet is the new TV home to both versions of Tales ... the episodes are just as effective now as they were when they originally aired. It’s exciting to be able to introduce this cult classic now to a new generation."

Con of the Dead: A horribly good Comic-Con party

San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC) news is heating up as the July 11 kick off is less than a month away. And along with reports of cool giveaways and panels, there's also reports of awesome parties coming in.

Just such a party "Con-of-the-Dead," the Friday the 13th bash hosted by FEARnet in conjunction with our friends over at Dread Central and Capcom's Resident Evil 6, as well as FANGORIA Entertainment, Screamfest Horror Film Festival and ShockTillYouDrop.com.

Taking place Friday, July 13, at San Diego’s Gothic-inspired Voyeur nightclub from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., PT, FEARnet reports "guests will experience an interactive event complete with playable demo stations featuring Resident Evil 6, a VIP suite decked out by Dark Sky Films, music spun by LA’s DJ Amanda Jones, go-go ghoul dancers, customized refreshments, and 'zombie-fied' photo booth."

FEARnet will also be leading the 6th Annual Zombie Walk, held the same day, where some winners of the more-than 300 participants will be able to enter the event.

"Our main goal at Comic-Con is to build an event that would allow fans to engage with our network firsthand," said Peter Block, President and General Manager of FEARnet. "We are excited for the chance to showcase our network to invited members of the media and entertainment industry, as well as selected participants from San Diego’s famous Zombie Walk."

Also, cast members of FEARnet’s first original TV series, Holliston, featuring Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Corri English, Laura Ortiz, and GWAR front man Oderus Urungus, will also be on hand, taking part in a panel presentation hosted by a surprise celebrity.
