Lyme-carrying deer tick
Q: I am a self-proclaimed Bigfoot Hunter in Pennsylvania. After one of our recent expeditions, my friend developed Lyme disease. Although I’ve never been bitten by a tick I am now very concerned about the possibility of it. How can I prevent being bitten? -Aiden, Pennsylvania

Dr. Spectre: Great question, Aiden. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or so they say. Lyme disease is becoming epidemic and Lyme awareness should be on the forefront of every paranormal investigator's mind. Lyme disease is a serious disorder that is caused by a microscopic, corkscrew-shaped bacterium (spirochetes) that are transmitted by the bite of deer ticks. Symptoms of Lyme are often times confused with influenza, infectious mononucleosis and rheumatoid arthritis. There is no fool proof way to prevent from being bitten, but here are a few helpful hints to stack the odds in your favor:

The Night Shift: The Jersey Devil Riseth?

Night Shift is the diary of Fighting Owl Film's new independent supernatural-adventure-comedy of the same name currently in distribution in Mobile, AL. Over the course of the next several weeks and months, you'll get an insider's peek at what it's like for filmmakers to craft a new entry of paranormal pop culture from Erin Lilley, a producer and actress on the film.

The other night, Soren, our cinematographer, composer-in-residence, voice of Herbie the Skeleton, and just plain old friend, came over to brainstorm project ideas with Thomas. I had to head out for choir practice, so I left the boys with a pizza and wished them luck. Two hours later, I came home to a modern-day version of Your Show of Shows.

Jersey Devil sketch,
'Philadelphia Post' 1909
An open laptop displayed MS Paint sketches of winged creatures, sci-fi robots, and a host of other monsters. A desktop monitor flickered between IMDb and Google Images, and chicken scratch-covered Post-It notes lay in the scanner, awaiting their own digitization. In the middle, the boys shouted out one-liners and gags at a pace so rapid-fire that Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner would have been proud. The only thing missing from this "writer's room" was an empty pot of coffee and a haze of cigarette smoke. I plopped myself down on the couch and enjoyed the show.

This is how things get started around Fighting Owl Films. Sometimes it's just Thomas scribbling on scrap paper. Sometimes ideas bounce off of me. Occasionally, a few of us sit around the living room and riff. The better ideas get vetted to make sure they're completely original, and we didn't subconsciously use someone else's creation. I actually sat with my phone in my hand, Googling bits and pieces of story as they flew past me.

Eventually, some of these ideas will make it into the script for our next project, while others will be kept on file for future use. Most will go in the garbage, but that's brainstorming for you. Not everything that comes from it is gold, but ideas beget ideas, and you don't always know what will work until you try it out loud.

But what are these ideas for? I know I've mentioned in passing that our next project, concerning the Jersey Devil, is currently in the early planning stages, but I haven't really elaborated on it. I thought it might be nice for you to get the information straight from the writer/director himself, so I sat down with Thomas for a little interview:

So, Thomas, with The Night Shift (TNS) about to be released, what's next for Fighting Owl Films?

It feels like people have been asking “what’s next?” since the second principal photography wrapped on TNS. I’ve been kicking around several ideas since then, all of which I hope to someday get off the ground. I’ve settled on what our next potential project will be: The Jersey Devil Expedition (working title). I say “potential” because it all comes down to funding. If we’re unable to secure funding, the project could, at the least, be scaled back and, at most, get scrapped.

Stephen King reads excerpt of 'The Shining' sequel 'Dr. Sleep'

After paying a visit to George Mason University in D.C. last weekend, where he read an excerpt of the in-progress book, Stephen King officially announced he's working on Dr. Sleep, the sequel to The Shining. According to his site, the book's plot revolves around an adult Danny Torrance and "a traveling group of vampires called The Tribe."

Entertainment Weekly posted video of King reading from the sequel at Mason, which we've embedded below. Also if you want more of King this week, and are curious to hear him share further thoughts about Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining, be certain to tune in to TCM for The Horrors of Stephen King Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.

New 'American Horror Story' house call and trailer

Another splendid American Horror Story trailer, along with a new "house call" that makes us laugh at frightened people. Basically, two solid embeds to click on.

New 'Walking Dead' gives 'slim chances' to survivors

The new trailer for AMC's The Walking Dead prominently features zombie highway (not to be confused with the addictive iPhone game of the same name), but what might be more intriguing in the embedded video is the mounting tensions between the survivors. We also see a glimpse of what looks like the character Maggie from the comics and of Hershel's farm (both of which we saw in the Comic-Con trailer. Faith looks to be a recurring theme this season, with the group facing "slim chances" and a sliver of hope. The second season premieres Oct. 16.

'Paranormal Witness' recap: Mansfield Mansion

BY AMANDA POOLE

Paranormal Witness is a reenactment program airing on Syfy at 10 p.m. on Weds and highlights stories taken from everyday people's encounters with the paranormal. Using a mixture of intimate first-hand testimony, actual home video and gritty realistic drama, Paranormal Witness transports viewers into a world turned upside-down by extraordinary, terrifying and sometimes life-threatening paranormal events. To read more about life after the eyewitness accounts, visit Syfy's follow-up interview segments.

Instead of telling two stories, this installment of Paranormal Witness focused on one family and the terror they experienced after purchasing a Connecticut home in 1994.

Amy Moore and her daughter Alyssa were in search for new house to call home when she found a beautiful old house up for auction. It was slightly falling apart, but Amy saw a lot of potential. She toured the house with the property manager, and as they went into the basement, noticed a concrete slab in the middle of the floor, with no reason on why it should be there. They then went inside of the house. The house was dirty and pretty messy, with a lot of old beds, wheelchairs and unusual equipment, but she could picture the possibilities. She also saw an old sign: "Mansfield Training School."

Lynx body spray inspires apocalyptic fantasies

It's the end of the world as you know it, and I feel ... frisky? A new advertisement from Lynx body spray  (another name for Axe in the UK, Australia and other markets) suggests that even though humankind is going down, things might be looking up for your lovelife - if you're an industrious Lynx user. The neo Noah in the embedded ad has a different kind of creature he hopes to attract on his ark. Funny stuff.

'The Horrors of Stephen King' sneak peek

We mentioned the Oct. 3 TCM documentary called A Night at the Movies: The Horrors of Stephen King, where author and filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau will chat with the horror master about the classic scary films that influenced him the most. Well, TCM responded in kind to our coverage and provided us with the following peek at The Horrors. Check it out and let us know what you think in the fan Forums, then tune in next Monday for the full monty.

On an unrelated note, the network also announced today that legendary director Martin Scorsese would begin penning a monthly column in October. As if Scorsese's career wasn't enough to merit him the column, it's an extra bonus that he recently won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire

Behind the Scenes of 'The Walking Dead'

We're getting closer to the Oct. 16 Season Two premiere of The Walking Dead. And so far, AMC is doing a nice job of whetting our zombie appetites with behind-the-scenes and making-of clips. Check out the one below with cast and Executive Producer Robert Kirkman.

Party like an undead porn star with Halloween Fleshlights

So you've heard of Fleshlights, right? No? OK, then this is going to get interesting.

See, there are these toys. No, not action figures, but more like sex toys for grown-up fun - specifically adult male fun. They look like large flashlights, but instead of containing a lightbulb which brightens your way in the darkness, these have various human orifices made of a synthetic skin and sleeve that just brightens the day of guys. The Fleshlight company (link totally NSFW) also has some toys for grown-up gals and gay males as well. Part of the appeal of the product - which has made more than $200 million-selling sales - is the safer alternative to real sex, and the multiple styles and textures fashioned after various porn stars. The product has even become mainstream enough to get a favorable nod in women's magazine Redbook last April.

Well, not content to stick with sex toys modeled after humans, and as a unique way to get into the October spirit, Fleshlight has recently announced a new style of toys to "Bring out the Freaks for Halloween." The Freaks line - to be filed under paranormal pop porn, perhaps - features four varieties of themed products:

The Night Shift: On to the Next

Night Shift is the diary of Fighting Owl Film's new independent supernatural-adventure-comedy of the same name currently in distribution in Mobile, AL. Over the course of the next several weeks and months, you'll get an insider's peek at what it's like for filmmakers to craft a new entry of paranormal pop culture from Erin Lilley, a producer and actress on the film.

On to the Next!

Wow.

Things are really starting to move around Fighting Owl Films HQ (aka My Living Room)! First off, we've found out a little bit more about where The Night Shift will be available. So far, it's Amazon (which you already knew about), Deep Discount, Buy.com, DVD Empire, Half.com, DVD Planet, CD Universe, and Home DVD Store.

There's also one more little place you may have heard of: WALMART!

That's right! Walmart will be stocking the movie, and not just online! According to the website, it'll be available in stores, too! If it ends up at the one we do our grocery shopping at, I'm totally stopping to take a picture. I don't care how stupid I look taking pictures in the middle of Walmart, as God is my witness, I. Will. Do. It.

Thomas and I are happily, busily tweeting and posting updates on all of our social networking sites. Should any more retailers be added to the list, you'll find them there. Prices vary from store to store, but so far, they're all in the under $20 range, so it's completely affordable, and would make the perfect holiday gift (hint, hint, wink, wink, say no more!).

Okay, shameless plugging aside, Thomas, Soren (our director of photography, composer, and voice of everyone's favorite skeleton) and I got to do a little photo shoot yesterday for the local paper. The Arts editor is doing a little piece on the movie receiving distribution, so we met up with their photographer in one of the cemeteries we shot in. Hopefully, it will all turn out well, and we'll have a cute, professionally shot picture to hang up next to the movie poster. In any case, we're overwhelmed with the amount of local support that's been shown. The hometown has been very kind to us.

Also, if you're going to be in the Atlanta area October 21-27, you'll want to check out the Horror Quest Film Festival. The Night Shift will be screening Wednesday the 26th at 9 p.m. at the Cinefest Film Theatre. Sadly, Thomas and I can't be there in person, but we'll be there in spirit, and hope some of you can go out and show your support of indie film.

'Supernatural' Friday: Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Mark Sheppard on Season 7

Misha Collins
When we last left the Winchester brothers, things had gone to hell in Heaven. Castiel has left his angelic self behind to become God after the Civil War in Heaven and a battle over the souls in Purgatory. Sam has his memories back, Raphael is destroyed, Crowley has escaped and an all-powerful Cas now tells the boys to worship him or suffer.

So what's next on Supernatural?

Jared Padalecki
Tune in to The CW tonight at 9 p.m. to find out (especially since Season Seven picks up mere seconds after Season Six ended). But since we like you Supernatural fans so much here at PPC, we decided to celebrate the day with a big hunk of interviews.

In the following videos (after the jump), "Sam Winchester" (Jared Padalecki), "Castiel" (Misha Collins), "Crowley" (Mark Sheppard) and "Bobby Singer" (Jim Beaver) talk about the new season and where there characters are going.

Enjoy, and Happy Supernatural Friday. And be sure to visit the PPC Forums to discuss the show tonight.

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando begins ... Now!

Tyra Banks &"Lady Luck," photo by Kevin
Kolczynski, Universal Orlando Resort
Let the fear begin - again.

For 25 nights, beginning tonight and going through Oct. 31, Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights returns. This year, guests will once again face their biggest fears at eight haunted houses and six "scarezones" at the Central Florida theme park.

For their lucky 21st year, the horror hostess is Lady Luck (shown here with Tyra Banks) who "transforms from a tempting seductress to a bloodthirsty beast." According to the folks at Universal, Lady Luck "awaits those brave enough to challenge her and take a chance."

But beyond testing Luck, guests will have plenty of other opportunities to be frightened in the following terrifyingly themed areas (after the jump):

'Paranormal Witness' producer Mark Lewis on Syfy's new hit

BY AARON SAGERS

Syfy's Paranormal Witness is a bona fide hit for the network, and brings chills from the world of the unexplained into the living room through spooky reenactments and intense eyewitness interviews. Instead of relying on recurring characters or a host, Witness begins fresh each week with a new story ranging from hauntings to demonic infestation, alien encounters, cryptozoological run-ins and angelic interventions. If the audience doesn't buy into either of the two stories presented in each episode, Witness encourages them to try again the following week with the question, "Do you believe?" The show is entirely story-driven and breaks from a current trend of evidence-based paranormal investigative reality-TV programs.

So without evidence or a familiar cast, why does Paranormal Witness connect with viewers? The answer to that question is likely due to the involvement of series producer Mark Lewis. Lewis - whose documentaries have appeared on the BBC, Discovery, the History Channel, National Geographic, Spike and more - brings high quality to a show that could easily be all cheese.

To get the facts behind the frights, we spoke with Lewis about his approach to filmmaking, the pursuit of stories and his own beliefs in the paranormal. Listen to the embedded audio or read the transcripts after the jump.

'Paranormal Witness' recap: The Poltergeist/Watch In The Wilderness

BY AMANDA POOLE

Paranormal Witness is a reenactment program airing on Syfy at 10 p.m. on Weds and highlights stories taken from everyday people's encounters with the paranormal. Using a mixture of intimate first-hand testimony, actual home video and gritty realistic drama, Paranormal Witness transports viewers into a world turned upside-down by extraordinary, terrifying and sometimes life-threatening paranormal events.

The first installment this week focuses on Susan Lewis and her family who moved into a new California home in 2006. As you could guess, the dream home turned into a nightmare. First the family noticed objects being rearranged and stacked atop of each other. One day Susan's daughter Jamie was cleaning up spilt coffee - which was mysteriously thrown on her bed - when she set a bottle of bleach on the dresser. After briefly turning away, her dressers drawers were pulled open and the bleach was knocked over, pouring over all her clothes. Jamie yells for her mother, and when Susan entered the room, things began to launch off the bookshelves.

The family gathered they might have a poltergeist in the home, but say they had no clue that things were about to get a lot worse. Doors began to slam, lights flickered on and off, objects continued to be stacked and rearranged.

Witness then shows actual photos and video taken by the family of these events. This is a first for the show. There are images of writing on the walls, of objects strangely arranged throughout the house, and food thrown all over. One of the creepier images is of a footprint on the kitchen floor - a very inhuman-looking footprint, I might add.

Official 'Dark Shadows' cast photo released

Now that's better.

After a weird photo of star Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins surfaced last week, Entertainment Weekly got a first look at the cast from the movie adaptation for the '60s vampire soap Dark Shadows. No word on whether this photo's release has been planned for weeks or it's surfacing to counter the bad reaction to the Depp shot. Either way, this still looks weird but perhaps a little more appropriately weird for the source material.

For a breakdown of the characters shown in the photo, visit EW.

Hulk Hogan on his big life, afterlife and Micro Championship Wrestling

Hulk Hogan with MCW wrestlers Jess & Demo
If you're not watching Hulk Hogan's Micro Championship Wrestling on truTV (Weds at 10 p.m. ET), you're missing out on seeing the wrestling icon provide advice and guidance to "little wrestlers" on the new reality show.

Of course, you're also missing out on seeing Hogan do his Hulkster thing. Started by former wrestler Johnny Greene, the Micro Championship Wrestling (MCW) league is meant to be a serious pursuit but member infighting and conflict has been getting in the way. That's where Hogan comes in; he intends to rebuild the league from scratch by offering training and taking the wrestlers on a six-state tour under his banner.

Although the show's tagline promises "half the size, twice the violence" (a claim that doesn't disappoint), Hogan says the show is not an exploitative "jackass"-style program. Instead of taking cheap shots at the "little wrestlers," Micro Championship Wrestling focuses on the drama of real people with actual problems and a dream to wrestle professionally.

In the audio interview (embedded below) with Aaron Sagers, Hogan talks about how the show goes beyond circus sideshow antics, and opens up about how the wrestlers not only inspired him, but brought up memories of his own successes in failures. Finally, Hogan discusses his own paranormal beliefs and recounts a touching tale that involved his dead father.

Aside from the ultimate showdown between Harry and Voldemort, the ultimate moment in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows - Part Two was the kiss. As in, the kiss between Ron and Hermione. In this clip from the upcoming Blu-ray release, David Yates discusses how the two friends Rupert Grint and Emma Watson approached the snog, accompanied by some adorable footage of the two. For more info from Watson, revisit the interview she gave right before the film's premiere.

'Haunted Collector,' 'Hollywood Treasure' renewed

Syfy announced today that it would be renewing Hollywood Treasure for a six-episode season, and Haunted Collector for 12 eps for summer 2012.  Congrats to John Zaffis and Joe Maddalena.

Happy 'International Talk Like A Pirate Day'

'Tis a shame if ye be forgot'n that tide is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Ye canna let th' tide go by without eatin', drinkin', cursin' yer co-workers an' family in th' words o' a good shipmate. Make certain t' load up on rum an' grub an' tell sea dogs an' land lubbers alike that ye`re th' captain o' th' tide so they better nay upset ye lest they keel haul th' plank.

An' one last'n thing: Before ye go back to plunderin', watch th' pictures from Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Say what ye will about th' followin' tales of Captain Jack, 'tis still be a fine piece o' cinema - 'specially th' scene below tells of th' traitor Barbossa an' his damned mates.

'Paranormal Challenge' Jerome, Arizona

BY AMANDA POOLE

For the Paranormal Challenge season finale Zak brought his judges (Dave Schrader, Patrick Burns, Chris Fleming) to Jerome, AZ - an old mining town where gambling, prostitutes and murder were a way of life. The two teams were Living Proof of the Paranormal and S.A.G.A.P.S (Southern Arizona Ghost and Paranormal Society), and the investigation sites were the Jerome Grand Hotel and the old town hospital.

This time each team got to do a spirit box session with guest judge and medium Fleming, and each picked up amazing and intelligent responses through the device. During one of the sessions with Living Proof of the Paranormal, a spirit came through making the comment that they were “bored.” Perhaps due to the lack of “sex” in their other life?

Throughout the night the teams reported many experiences, from knocking, snapping and banging sounds - which Fleming heard as well and gave him a bit of a jump. Some team members were also feeling as if they were being touched. But Gerson from Living Proof of the Paranormal didn’t mind it at all, when a frisky spirit started touching his upper thigh.

Each team was commended for doing a great job in their investigations, so the winner would be determined after the evidence review. Both teams had supposed visual evidence of what they claimed was a face captured with a full spectrum and thermal camera. Each judge’s agreed the visual evidence was inconclusive and just a form of matrixing.

As for the audio evidence, team S.A.G.A.P.S made the mistake of presenting an EVP that was really Hector’s, the team’s leaders own voice.

After Zak Bagans and the judges deliberated, they chose Living Proof of the Paranormal as their winner. The finale brings to a close a successful first season of the paranormal competition show. It was an intense one and leaves me anxiously awaiting Season Two.

Actor Nicolas Cage really Vampire 'Nicolas Cage'

So yeah, Nicolas Cage is a vampire, or some such member of the ageless walking dead. Or an immortal. Seriously.

An eBay vendor of antique photos is currently selling (for $1 million ... plus a backbreaking $2.75 for expedited shipping, natch) a Civil War-era photo of a man that looks like is Nicolas Cage. The photo is dated circa 1870 from Bristol, TN. The seller says the man in the image is the only unidentified person from an album of photography he found. As to how this might come to be an ageless Nicolas Cage, he posits:
Personally, I believe it's him and that he is some sort of walking undead / vampire, et cetera, who quickens/reinvents himself once every 75 years or so. 150 years from now, he might be a politician, the leader of a cult, or a talk show host.
C'mon, knowing Nicolas Cage, that just sounds ... actually pretty plausible - especially after you recall how readily he ate (3) live cockroaches for Vampire's Kiss.

Extra good news: If you ARE Nicolas Cage and want to buy the photo, you get a 25% discount (and an extra 25 for not draining the seller). Being a senior, senior, senior citizen does have its perks. Oh, and do stick around for the vendor's Q&A at the bottom of the listing.

Lobster Johnson is back!

Fan favorite, "The Lobster" is back. The character from the universe of Hellboy is making another appearance in February's Dark Horse Presents #9.

According to Dark Horse, in the plotline - titled "Tony Masso’s Finest Hour," - the pulp hero is on the trail of a notorious mob boss. "However, when he arrives at the gangster’s mansion to take him down, it turns out there is more afoot than just good old-fashioned organized crime."

Lobster Johnson and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, who penned the story, sums up the adventure simply: “Lobster Johnson takes a beating!!!”

Who is excited to see The Lobster coming back?

'Paranormal Witness' recap: Haunted Highway/Kentucky UFO Chase

BY AMANDA POOLE

Paranormal Witness is a reenactment program airing on Syfy, which highlights stories taken from everyday people's encounters with the paranormal. Using a mixture of intimate first-hand testimony, actual home video and gritty realistic drama, Paranormal Witness transports viewers into a world turned upside-down by extraordinary, terrifying and sometimes life-threatening paranormal events. Already the show is a hit for Syfy, netting 1.63 million viewers for the 10 p.m. ET timeslot.

Now in its second week, the Sept. 14 episode focused on Christine and Nick, a woman and son who went missing in Southern California in 1994. They were last seen stopping for gas before driving off onto the twisting and winding roads up the mountain.

A few days after Christine’s and Nick’s disappearance, Deborah Hoyt, who was staying at a family member’s house, woke up in the middle of the night, with a strong urge to head home. She woke her husband and they began their drive. They were coming around a bend on HWY 50 when Deborah noticed a naked woman laying lifeless along side the road.

Zak Bagans stares into abyss in 'Dark World'

BY AARON SAGERS

If you gaze for long into an abyss, does the abyss gaze also into you?

There are a lot of questions posed in Dark World: Into the Shadows with the Lead Investigator of The Ghost Adventures Crew, the new memoir by paranormal investigator Zak Bagans, co-creator and star of Travel Channel’s reality-TV show Ghost Adventures, and creator and host of the network’s competition show Paranormal Challenge.

For instance, what makes a grown man spend his nights in purportedly haunted locations? How did he get into the paranormal? What are his theories on ghosts and demons, and why investigate the way he does? What are his favorite locations to visit?

Out of all the questions posed, it’s the one above, paraphrased by Friedrich Nietzche, that seems most pressing. If a man fights too long against dragons, doesn’t he run the risk of becoming a dragon himself; might he not be absorbed by the dark world?

The answer isn’t so simple.

Anyone who has watched Adventures knows that Bagans is a big personality. As leader of his team, which includes friends Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin, he is an intense character of reality TV who commits completely to his work. And that work just happens to require he plunge into the abyss on a regular basis.

Aided by co-author Kelly Crigger, Dark World reveals that while he’s attracted to the dark side – and is comfortable interacting, flirting and poking at it – he is not himself of the dark.

In fact, the book - less of a linear account of the 2006 Ghost Adventures documentary or the show, which premiered in 2008 - often reads like the journal of a supernatural explorer. He theorizes about the unknown, and is both working out answers to his personal inquiries while positing questions for whatever reader stumbles upon his words. It is actually pretty fitting that Bagans reports having dreams (or pastlife flashes?) of himself as an 18th century deckhand since the book could just as easily be the lost letters of an Abraham Van Helsing discovered on an abandoned ghost ship.

And yet, even when discussing topics that some consider preposterous, Bagans’ sounds remarkably rational. He doesn’t paint himself to be a paranormal warrior – although that would be pretty badass.

Contrary to certain assertions that Bagans just shouts at ghosts all night long, the investigator is quite thoughtful about his pursuits. He talks about frightening moments and encounters with lost souls that overcame him with sadness. He has visited hundreds of sites that witnessed murder, torture and heartache, and it has affected him, he says.

Bagans also uses Dark World to discuss intimate details about his life. He opens up about the “severe social phobia” he had as a child, and how he felt empowered by his ghostly connections. He writes that he’s “sensitive” to paranormal phenomena, and explores what that means to him. He additionally shares his love of certain movies; he has an affinity for Ghost and expresses hope the afterlife is similar to it.

However, even if he’s “sensitive,” it would be incorrect to say the book exposes the “sensitive side” of Bagans. Instead, these are more the quiet thoughts of an explosive, dynamic personality.

But the explosive part is in the book as well. Bagans is an adrenaline junky for the paranormal. Sure, he says he gets scared, yet admits that there is a high associated with dealing with the unknown. Plus, Bagans says he won’t shrink away from a good dustup with a demon. He views those nasty spirits as bullies and is willing to take the fight to them to help stamp out the malevolence.

These sentiments make Dark World pretty exciting and refreshing. So frequently, the new wave of paranormal investigator is so dedicated to appearing like a serious researcher that they won’t cop to the fact this stuff can be macabre fun and that it can hook you.

While the book is not Bagans’ attempt to frighten the reader, one of the joys of Dark World is the occasional chill the reader experiences as a result of his encounters. With every page and anecdote, the ghost adventurer suggests you needn’t be too afraid of the paranormal – until you should be very afraid.

Those chills separate the skeptics from the believers amongst readers. If the potential hazards of his adventures freak you out even a little, then he suggests you may be more of a believer than you’re willing to admit.

Bagans himself warns it is important to maintain a level of skepticism when investigating, but he is not a skeptic. This is another departure from other paranormal investigative books that leverage the conviction of the investigator with too much doubt. A book about a ghost hunter should largely be about a ghost believer, and Bagans definitely is one. He will discuss his beliefs with skeptics but won’t dial them down to do so.

He makes it evident time and again that a large portion of his mission is to understand and help where he can. Bagans communicates he thinks it’s possible for the living to provide assistance to the formerly living. If you only judge his actions based on his provocative interactions with evil entities, he says you just don’t get it – and that’s fine by him.

This is also a testament to Crigger whose light touch assists the investigator in maintaining his voice and sense of humor. Fans of Ghost Adventures and Paranormal Challenge will recognize Bagans on the page. Likewise, though it helps to already be familiar with the shows when reading the book, it isn’t necessary. Bagans and Crigger do use some shorthand when discussing locations from the series or investigative instruments, but newcomers won’t be left in a lurch.

In Dark World, Zak Bagans says he’s stared into the abyss - continues to stare into it - and he wants to give readers a glimpse of what that’s like. The result is an insightful, sometimes freaky, read from a man you may recognize from TV but don’t yet truly know.

Greg Nicotero named co-exec producer for 'Walking Dead'

According to a press release just received:
AMC announced today that Emmy Award-winning make-up effects artist Greg Nicotero has been named co-executive producer of The Walking Dead. Nicotero has also inked a first-look deal with the network, which gives him the opportunity to bring his own passion projects to AMC. At Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Nicotero won Best Prosthetic Make-up for AMC’s The Walking Dead. Nicotero directs a series of webisodes this season and is also set to direct an episode.
After some discouraging news in July about Frank Darabont's departure, this is a very positive move by AMC and should engender some hope with fans. Nicotero is a real pro. Check out our interview with him from Comic-Con.

'Dark Shadows': First look of Johnny Depp as Barnabus

This is weird. As much as Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's collaborations have yielded some great results (and sometimes not so much), it's really starting to feel like the duo is trying really hard to pull off a "Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaboration."

Both reportedly have a love of the original Dark Shadows, so maybe they'll pull off the 2012 film adaptation/update, but what's going on with this image? To quote Badass Digest's David Faraci, this looks like "Michael Jackson cosplaying as the Joker."

'Ghostbusters' theatrical re-release this October?

According to the Ghostbusters Facebook page, this is happening. The official word is:
Alright, Ghostbusters fans. It’s time to get your cats and dogs together and prepare for mass hysteria: This October, for the first time in over 25 years, the original and unforgettable Ghostbusters makes its triumphant return to theaters!
Sounds like good news to us at PPC, but will you shell out $10 or more to see a movie you likely already own on the big screen? Think this is a maneuver to see how interested fans are in GB3?

'American Horror Story' house call: Better than 'Scare Tactics'?

It's super morbid, I know. But there is just something so enjoyable watching people get terrified by harmless pranks. I have spent hours on YouTube watching clips of people concentrating on a computer game or idyllic scene only to see them leap three feet in the air when Linda Blair's Exorcist face pops up. It's also why Scare Tactics is a stupid pleasure.

But to promote the new American Horror Story on FX, the show is upping the weird ante. Instead of a classic ghost or zombie, the "American Horror Story House Call" (embedded below) sneaks the creepy latex man into people's home to make them lose their s#!+. What really makes the scenes work is that when the victims encounter him standing over them, silently, you can imagine what's going through their head: "Is this a ghost or The Gimp from Pulp Fiction?" Either way, for a brief second, these victims start to clinch and think they're about to have a painful end.

Check out the House Call below, and sign up your own friends and family for a visit at the AHS House Call site.

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1' final trailer hits

Here it is, Twihards, the beginning of the end - part one. What do you think? Fang-popping goodness or are you worried? Yahoo Movies just premiered this and were so kind to allow us to embed it here.

'Vampire Diaries' teaser poster

Vampires, werewolves, Nina Dobrev!

The third season of The Vampire Diaries premieres in just two days and The CW wants to guarantee you'll be tuning in by releasing the poster below to tease and confound. The image - somewhat reminiscent of this one from True Blood - shows stars Nina Dobrev (Elena), Paul Wesley (Stefan), Ian Somerhalder (Damon) and Joseph Morgan (Klaus) hanging out after a pretty messy fruit salad session. The image comes on the heels of these other bloody fruit-themed images.

What does the highly sexual and violent image portend for the upcoming season? Your predictions? Whatever it all means, it's certainly hot.

Holzers' Haunted History

Hans Holzer was a renowned paranormal researcher and journalist who wrote more than 140 books. He was a mainstream success within paranormal pop culture, as well as with the dedicated community. After he passed away, his daughter Alexandra took up the mantle and continues to follow in her father's footsteps. This recurring feature written by Alexandra explores the work of both Holzers and provides insight into their unique relationship as First and second generation paranormalists blazing a ghostly trail for the past, present and future in science and metaphysics."

When it comes to my father's favorite books, there are way too many to list. Hans was an avid book collector who enjoyed everything from Chinese Medicine to Astrology, UFOs, Healing, Sexual Practices, Flowers and Nature. And of course, there were a lot of paranormal books in that stack, but I don't need to list those. Instead, if you'd like to get more of a look at the man behind the public figure, I'd advise you to read some of these favorites (some are no longer in print and require some searching to find).

T'ai Chi Ch'uan: Body and Mind in Harmony: An Ancient Chinese Way of Exercise to Achieve Health and Tranquility by Sophia Delza
The Good News Publishing Company, North Canton, Ohio, circa 1975
I find this choice hilarious because his 'idea' of exercise was stretching in the morning, letting out a loud roar of a yawn and grabbing his first cup of Joe for the day!

Secrets of Life Extension: How to Halt or Reverse the Aging Process and Live a Long and Healthy Life by John A. Mann
Harbor Publishing Inc., circa 1980
He tried his hand at every trick in the book, literally! He gave up on his hair long before his hair knew it was doomed to be a dome however; the ladies still loved him and his witty charm. I read the book and it is simple yet clear as to what us humans need to be doing. Going back to the basics.

'True Blood': Zombies are the new Vampires

They said it. Of course, it was a good joke but would anyone want to see zombies showing up in Bon Temps?

'True Blood' finale: WTF?

Am I right? Talk about it here.

Cardiff Giant to be resurrected, buried again

Some stories never die. Some need to be buried again and dug up to be appreciated. That's exactly what is happening on Oct. 16 when Central New York artist Ty Marshal recreates the Cardiff Giant sensation from 1869.

The Cardiff Giant hoax - often referred to as the greatest in American history - was the brainchild of New York businessman and atheist George Hull, who hired workers to carve a 10-foot-tall "petrified man" out of a block of gypsum after he had an argument with a Methodist reverend about the chapter in Genesis 6:4 that states "giants once roamed the earth." He then arranged for it to be buried in Cardiff, just south of Syracuse, dug up a year later and “found,” leading thousands of people to believe it was the petrified remains of an ancient giant man.

It so captured the nation's attention that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum and Mark Twain wrote about it. Later, a syndicate of Syracuse businessmen purchased the Giant for $23,000 and moved it to Syracuse for display, upping the price to $1.00 per view.

Fast forward 142 years to Central New York artist Ty Marshal. Marhsal is creating a replica of the famous Cardiff Giant with plans to bury it in Syracuse’s Lipe Art Park on West Fayette Street - only to dig it up again on Oct. 16, the anniversary of the original Giant discovery.

'Paranormal Challenge' USS Hornet

BY AMANDA POOLE

Although ParanormalPopCulture.com doesn't normally write recaps for reality-TV shows, this week's episode of Paranormal Challenge was especially noteworthy due to the unique evidence found by one of the teams.

Bagans and judges Nichols, Schrader, Harris
The game show's investigation took place aboard the U.S.S. Hornet, a WWII naval ship docked in Alameda, Calif.. Two teams S.R.I.P ( Spirit Realm Investigative Project) and Soul Seekers battled it out for the ultimate bragging rights in front of host Zak Bagans and judges Dave Schrader, Dr. Andrew Nichols and scream queen Danielle Harris.

Per usual, Zak gave the competing teams selected equipment and sent them to different zones of the ship to begin their hunt. Team Soul Seekers began in the brig, where team member Allan noticed movement in one of the cells. Lead Investigator Dante took charge and used the technique of shouting orders to the spirits to make themselves known. Shortly after this the team started feeling a energy around them, and reported goosebumps.

New 'American Horror Story' peeks

Today brought us two new sneaks from FX's American Horror Story. Premiering Oct. 5, this show is The Shining meets Twin Peaks and is the one to watch this fall for paranormal junkies.
