Josh Gates To Star In New Travel Channel Series

As first reported by Variety, Josh Gates is returning to television, and this time with the Travel Channel.

The Syfy stalwart who had hosted paranormal adventure series "Destination Truth," as well as the network's "Ghost Hunters Live," and served as a frequent Syfy emcee, will appear in "Expedition Unknown," which examines locations connected to "iconic mysteries." But this isn't DT redux, since the sites are more of an exploration of mystery, not the unexplained. Travel has not yet announced airdates for the six-episode series produced by Ping Pond Productions ("Destination Truth," "Finding Bigfoot") but the official synopsis follows:

“Expedition Unknown” (wt) chronicles the adventures of Josh Gates as he investigates iconic mysteries across the globe. Gates begins by interviewing key eyewitnesses and uncovering recent developments in the story, then springboards into a fully immersive exploration. This authentic, roughshod adventure leads Gates closer to the truth behind these unanswered global enigmas, such as the disappearance of Amelia Earhart’s plane. “Expedition Unknown” is greenlit for six one-hour episodes produced by Ping Pong Productions.

'Stranded' with Josh Gates: The 'Destination' adventurer sets sights on scares with new show

Gates, Courtesy Syfy
BY AARON SAGERS

After five years of chasing ghosts and monsters across the planet, while frequently encountering dangerous transportation and questionable food, Josh Gates is now working on his scariest assignment yet -- and he prefers it that way.

The lead investigator of Syfy's globetrotting, monster-hunting series Destination Truth, which premiered in 2007, Gates has become something of a staple for the network. Beyond acting as host (and eventually co-executive producer) on the show, his face has also been out there as Syfy's de facto emcee. But now he has stepped entirely behind the camera as executive producer and showrunner for Stranded, a new paranormal reality-TV Syfy series debuting Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. that will introduce some scare tactics to the well-tread investigative genre.

Produced by Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Stranded) and Ping Pong Productions (Destination Truth, Finding Bigfoot and a handful of other paranormal shows), Stranded attempts to merge the standard ghosthunting show with familiar ghost movie tropes to create a new formula: the horror docu-drama.

Each week a new group of three -- roomies, newlyweds, skeptics, believers which Paranormal Pop Culture posted a casting call for -- is placed in a different, supposedly haunted location for five days straight without even a production crew in tow. For instance,  the premiere takes place on Star Island, a 50,000 square-foot hotel on an island 10 miles off the coast of New Hampshire, and supposedly home to an evil spirit Native Americans feared. When the team arrives, they they find a brief history of the building and a handful of paranormal investigation gadgets waiting for them, and they're tasked with spending their waking hours exploring the mysteries of the building.

But the emphasis of Stranded is not on capturing evidence inasmuch as simply living in a haunted house alongside whatever potential activity might be taking place there.

And based on the first two of six episodes, the result is an intriguing, sometimes startling, psychological drama. Instead of the ghost "expert" series where stoicism is prized, Stranded focuses on the experience of these average Joes and Janes. As such, when things go bump in the night, and the investigators can't run away, it can create a deep, emotional response.

The show is also an interesting evolution for Gates. Going from having a camera strapped to his back and front as he traversed the world, he now finds himself largely in a production office, putting together an entertainment product. While the challenges of producing a show is perhaps less sexy than, say, hunting for yeti, it's no less a massive, and scary, project. But in a recent phone interview, Gates spoke at length about his excitement around Stranded, and about evoking authentic, visceral reactions from the participants -- and hopefully from the viewing audience.

Syfy greenlights new paranormal shows - cancels 'Ghost Hunters International,' 'Fact or Faked,' 'Destination Truth'?

Expect a lot more paranormal activity on the Syfy network in the coming year - but don't expect a few familiar shows to be returning.

The channel announced in a press release today that it greenlit Ghost Mine, Stranded and Notorious Hauntings - three new paranormal-themed reality shows to premiere in the first part of 2013. According to Syfy, the shows build upon the net's "popular paranormal reality programming block led by Ghost Hunters, Paranormal Witness and Haunted Collector."

Ghost Mine, premiering Jan. 16 at 10 p.m., focuses on a re-opened, supposedly haunted gold mine where "a colorful team of miners" seek fortune alongside a group of paranormal investigators - on hand to explore the ghostly activity and Masonic connections. Stranded, premiering Feb. 27 at 10 p.m., is produced by Destination Truth's Josh Gates (who also serves as showrunner) and Ping Pong Productions (Destination Truth, Finding Bigfoot), and follows teams of three dropped into famously haunted locales. The teams' experiences will be documented with handheld cameras and stationary cams to create a blend of a POV and docudrama.

Then there is Notorious Hauntings (premiering Spring 2013), produced by Pilgrim Studios - the production company behind the Ghost Hunters franchise. A globetrotting paranormal investigative show, the Notorious Hauntings team uncovers history and explores claims of paranormal activity at locations such as Dracula's stomping grounds in Romania and the sites of Jack the Ripper's murders in London.

Notorious Hauntings sounds similar to another international ghost hunting Syfy show produced by Pilgrim ... called Ghost Hunters International. And Mike Nichols, who has exec-produced GH and GHI, also produces Notorious. For a while now it has seemed that GHI - also produced by GH's Jason Hawes - wouldn't be returning, but this puts the nail in that ghost show's coffin.

Following Ghost Hunters Academy, this is the second GH show that appears to be cancelled. After a rotating cast of investigators, coupled with the fact that they haven't filmed any episodes for more than a year (and that last season's ratings were weak), it is reasonable to expect a GHI reboot. But even though GH remains a strong ratings performer (and was recently renewed for season nine), does Pilgrim and Syfy's scrapping of the GHI name suggest a move away from GH as a franchise?

Additionally, it is noteworthy that Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files and Destination Truth are absent from Syfy's list of "popular paranormal reality programming block." Through omission, the announcement of three new shows reads like a de facto cancellation notice of three other shows - all while reinforcing Syfy's continued commitment to the paranormal.

Of course, this could be reading too much into the press release and maybe we can expect to see more of Kris Williams and Barry FitzGerald's GHI team, as well as Ben Hansen's Fact or Faked crew. Whatever the case, Truthies out there can take comfort that at least Josh Gates, who has become a trusted pitch man for the entire net, will still be with Syfy - even if behind the scenes. Then again, this is the TV biz, folks; even cancelled shows can come back from the dead to haunt another day.

So what do you think? Are you a diehard GHI, DT or FoF fan who is riled up over the announcement? Are you stoked to see these new shows?

New show seeking ghost hunters to strand in haunted house

We got a hot tip in the ol' electronic mail about a new paranormal show for a major cable network seeking teams willing to be stranded in a haunted house for a week. And they are seeking them immediately to begin shooting Sept. 4 through Oct. 15.

Created by the producer behind Paranormal Activity (presumably Oren Peli) and Ping Pong Productions (the production company behind paranormal series Destination Truth, Finding Bigfoot, Chasing UFOs, The Othersiders and The Supernaturalist), the show is seeking groups of three believers in the paranormal for the haunted week. To be considered, trios must send a photo of the three of you, your names, ages, location, and relation to one another to GhostTVshow@gmail.com

The official word is that the show is looking for non-believers, skeptics and believers, but our sources say it's better to have more of a believer approach within the group. In your email, say where you stand. Also, a co-ed group is highly recommended.

Oh, and as an added incentive, the cast gets paid for the show.

Erin Ryder changes 'Destination' to 'Chasing UFOs'

BY AARON SAGERS

If the truth is out there, a team from the National Geographic Channel might be the best shot there is of finding it. But the network’s new docu-series, Chasing UFOs, ups the ante in the search for answers from The X-Files believer/skeptic duo of Mulder and Scully, and adds a third character – the “skeliever.”

Enter Erin Ryder. Haling upstate New York, Ryder has an extensive resume of producing shows that range from topics such as parkour to Pussycat Dolls to, most recently, the paranormal. She is a skeptic who wants to believe – and might have enough reasons to do so after the first season of the NatGeo show, which premieres with a two back-to-back episodes tonight at 9 p.m.

Ryder is already known to fans of the unexplained by her work as co-executive producer and on-camera adventurer on the Syfy monster-hunting show Destination Truth (which debuts its fifth season on July 10 at 10 p.m.). But in Chasing UFOs – also from Truth production company Ping Pong Productions – Ryder takes the lead as her team looks to the skies and into the shadows.

Along with UFOlogist James Fox and skeptical scientist Ben McGee, Ryder serves as co-executive producer and field researcher in a pursuit that often takes them into a dark territory of extraterrestrial sightings, alien abductions and government conspiracies. In the first episodes alone, the team heads to Texas and encounters a town where more than 30 residents claim they saw mysterious lights flying above them. Then there are is the retired military brass who warns that a large-scale cover-up is in place – a warning that hits close to home when the team believes they’re being followed. And yes, there is a lot of investigating and running around in the dark - which is a fun draw of the show.

But instead of only pursuing theories and eyewitness accounts - and playing with lots of cool gadgets - Chasing UFOs also attempts to pursue the science behind E.T. experiences. For instance, the show is working with SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) to send an outer space, crowdsourced reply to the "Wow! Signal" of 1977.

Erin Ryder joined us to discuss her leap from monsters to aliens, and open up about the science, skepticism - and lots of bleeped-out swear words - of Chasing UFOs, along with some inside info on the new season (and future) of Destination Truth. (After the jump...)

NatGeo's 'Chasing UFOs' to send tweets to aliens

From left: McGee, Ryder, Fox. Courtest NatGeo
On Aug. 15, 1977, scientists from SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) picked up an unexplained transmission from outer space that was 30 times strong than any received before or since. Named "The Wow! Signal," it remains a mysterious message from the stars.

And National Geographic Channel's new show, Chasing UFOs wants to send a reply on the 35th anniversary.

On June 29, from 8 p.m. ET to midnight PT, National Geographic will collect tweets tagged with the hashtag #ChasingUFOs. Then, on Aug. 15th they'll include the tweets (along with videos recorded by celebrities and VIPs) and transmit them into space from Arecibo Observatory, the world’s largest ground-based telescope (as seen in Contact). The tweets will also be streamed during showings of Chasing UFOs.

The Wow Reply is an interesting move for the new series Chasing UFOs, which premieres June 29. The show - executive produced and starring Destination Truth's Erin Ryder - follows a team of investigators who research reports of alien abduction, UFO sightings and military cover-ups. The team comprises one believer (UFOlogist James Fox), one skeptic (field scientist Ben McGee) and Ryder, who is the undecided "Skeliever." Over the course of the eight episodes, the networks says the team will "collect video footage of unusual-shaped lights over Arizona, meets with an alleged alien abduction survivor in Colorado and even tracks glowing orbs near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center."

After the jump, check out videos about The Wow Reply and see Lost's Jorge Garcia's message for the space aliens. Now, let's just hope those messages to the stars don't include Twitter rumors about E.T.'s death, or anything having to do with a Kardashian.

'Destination Truth' promo: 'Man of Adventure'

Gates and team during Season 4, courtesy Syfy
Alright truthies, Josh Gates and his roaming band of monster-and-myth hunters return on July 10 with an all-new season of Destination Truth. But if you were worried that the long delay between episodes may have somehow affected Gates or the tone of the show, the "Man of Adventure" promo will allay your fears for Season Five.

According to Syfy, Gates - along with investigator/researcher Erin Ryder, camera guy Gabe Copeland, tech manager Tony Gonzales, case manager Chris Lore, audio gal Allie Boettger, and camera dud Kyle Wheeler - will "lead viewers into a remote Transylvanian village on a hunt for vampires, explore the reportedly haunted Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala, and descend into one of the world’s biggest caves in the jungles of Vietnam to search for phantoms." The season will also have the team traveling to Kazakhstan (a Destination Truth first). At the overwhelming request of fans, the team will also return to Romania for a return visit to a haunted forest, the site of their most terrifying investigation to date.

Syfy announces dates for a paranormal summer

Looks like Syfy can't get enough of the unexplained this summer. According to a new press release, the network is rolling out a slew of paranormal-themed movies and shows - including two new ones - to give you chills during the warmer months. Let's dive in and see what they are so you can mark your calendars and set your DVRs now.

JUNE

HAUNTED COLLECTOR
(Season two premiere)
Wednesday, June 6, 9 p.m.
Haunted Collector features eminent paranormal collector John Zaffis, who searches for objects that have become home to paranormal spirits and/or energy. Each week Zaffis and his family help someone who’s terrorized by something strange in their own home, using the latest technology to identify the source of the paranormal activity. On the season 2 premiere of Haunted Collector, the team heads to Warsaw, Kentucky, where a woman’s home is suffering hauntings, possibly from two steamboats which crashed in a fiery collision, killing more than 60 people in 1868. Next, they travel to Huron, Ohio, in a race against the clock to remove the dangerous energy from an abandoned silo, scheduled to be destroyed in 48 hours.

Josh Gates' 'Destination Dinner' to serve up travel to fans

To paraphrase Indiana Jones, it’s not the years that matter, it’s the mileage. And adventurer and TV host Josh Gates has a lot of miles - frequent flier miles, that is. In fact, the star of Syfy’s travel and monster-hunting show Destination Truth has so many that the confessed miles hoarder will begin dishing them out as part of a new project called “Destination Dinner.”

Announced at last week’s C2E2 in Chicago, Gates (also the author of Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter) will begin advertising dinners to be held across the world as a way to give back to fans, and to expose them to the adventures of travel. Once a location is revealed via social media, Gates will foot the bill for the meal and guide a short tour to anyone who chooses to hop on a plane, train or automobile to get there. Moreover, he will select a random fan and use his miles to cover their flight.

According to Gates, people are looking for adventures and want to get out into the unknown, and “Destination Dinner” is his way of providing that for his supporters. The project will be launching Summer 2012, which is when Season Five of Destination Truth premieres, but Gates said this is a standalone, side project not affiliated with Syfy.

Josh Gates sat down for an exclusive with Paranormal Pop Culture to discuss the inspiration behind “Destination Dinner,” as well as provide some hints at where dinner will be served (after the jump) …

Super Syfy press tour - Imagine Greater all day

Monday marks another Syfy Digital Media Press Tour, and Paranormal Pop Culture will be taking part once again. The event will feature interviews and panels from all the biggest Syfy shows, including Being Human, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Face Off, Destination Truth and more.

We will also be talking to the cast of the original Peter Pan prequel flick Neverland. Stay tuned and submit questions, and follow along on Twitter for all the latest. Basically, if the Syfy motto is to Imagine Greater, join us to imagine greater all day.

'Destination Truth Live': Allison Scagliotti of 'Warehouse 13' on board

Allison Scagliotti of Warehouse 13 will indeed be joining Josh Gates and Co. in Ireland for the four-hour, first-ever live Destination Truth investigation.

Looks like we called it, and yes, it feels so good to be right.

Syfy's 'Destination Truth: Live' promo with more show details

Syfy just released a little more info on the DT Live episode in the form of a promo, including the investigation time of four hours, and the fact that the viewer interactive component will be called the "Virtual Base Camp."

Syfy 'Destination Truth' Live details

When we first reported about the Destination Truth Live St. Patrick's Day investigation, we speculated - a lot.

Now that the site for the DT Live episode/premiere has launched, the speculation is over and it would appear we were sorta right ... and pretty wrong.

We predicted Josh Gates & Co.'s investigation for the legendary banshee, which will take place at the famous Duckett's Grove Castle in Ireland, and begins at 7 p.m. EST, would feature some guest investigators. Such predicted guests were to include Allison Scagliotti from Warehouse 13Amy Bruni from Ghost HuntersMcKenzie Westmore from reality competition Face Off, and Being Human werewolf costar Sam Huntington. It turns out those picks were all incorrect.

However, we were spot-on about guests Barry Fitzgerald, the Irish leader from Ghost Hunters International, his co-lead Kris Williams and former DT teammate (and current Fact or Faked investigator) Jael De Pardo.

So instead of focusing on our flaws and foibles, we will choose to gloat a bit because if para-fiend Meat Loaf thinks two out of three ain't bad, then we think he'd say the same about three out of seven.

UPDATE: As of March 8, Syfy announced Allison Scagliotti will indeed be joining DT Live.

Destination Truth goes Live for St. Patrick's Day

We've been hearing rumblings about this for some time now, but it is now official: Destination Truth is going the Ghost Hunters route and doing a live investigation on March 17, 2011.

Since this will be airing on St. Patrick's Day, it's only natural that host Josh Gates travel to Ireland for his season premiere to search for the legendary banshee of Duckett's Grove Castle. Gates returns to Ireland only a year after he investigated leprechauns in Doolin. The episode was also the show's most-watched episode, which may explain why Gates is going live there.

'Destination Truth' sneak peek, Josh Gates panel interview

Destination Truth fans rejoice. Not only do we offer you a super sneak peek at the new DT episode, "Haunted Island Ruins," but we also want to share the panel interview with Josh Gates at last week's Syfy Digital Media Tour.

Gates talks with our own Aaron Sagers about movies, and what movie replica Josh would love to get his hands on through the new show, Hollywood Treasure.

In this Thursday's episode at 9 p.m. on Syfy, As the team "scuffles through the desert they come across footprints as a full moon sets in. They enter a cave to try and cure their curious appetite but may get more than they bargained for in the end."

Sounds spooky. Tune in and find out.

'Mongolian Death Worm' attacks Syfy

After all the attention being used up on bigfoot and Chupey the Chupacabra, the Mongolian Death Worm finally gets its due in a new - dare I say, epic? - original Syfy movie.

As dedicated crypto fans, and Season Two Destination Truth viewers, already know, the terrifying MDW (not to be confused with the refreshing MGD) is a 4-foot-long beasty in the Gobi Desert that fires electricity and secretes acid.

Although Syfy is promoting the May 8 movie as based on a DT case, the plot synopsis is just a bit different:

'Ghost Hunters' 100th episode details

It's only a week away from the 100th episode of Ghost Hunters - you know, the paranormal pop culture franchise that launched the reality-TV ghost craze - and the party machine is rolling for the big night. More details have emerged about the investigation of Alcatraz (show here in a pic by Ben Peoples) and live "interactive" event hosted by Josh Gates on Weds, March 3. Here's the word about the event straight from Syfy, and two promos for it are embedded below for your enjoyment.

On Wednesday, March 3, join Jason, Grant and the rest of the TAPS team as the Ghost Hunters celebrate their triumphant 100th episode with a LIVE audience from the legendary Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center.  From 9-11pm, the team will present their first-ever investigation at Alcatraz as well as take a look back at the most shocking and spine-chilling moments the hit series has caught on tape over the past five seasons.

Josh Gates (Destination Truth) will host the event, which will feature investigators from all three Ghost Hunters teams gathered together for the very first time.  Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango, Amy Bruni, Kris Williams (Ghost Hunters), Barry Fitzgerald, Robb Demarest, Dustin Pari (Ghost Hunters International), Susan Slaughter and Karl Pfeiffer (Ghost Hunters Academy) will take the stage and get the chance to talk directly with the fans, answering audience questions from in the studio and Syfy.com.

Throughout the show, Josh will also reveal some surprises coming up in the Ghost Hunters franchise!

As always, Syfy.com will serve as the ultimate Ghost Hunters destination online, linking viewers to all of the action in the studio in real time.  The site will host an interactive center helmed by investigator Britt Griffith, where fans can log on throughout the evening to be a part of the broadcast.  Viewers will be able to ask questions of all participating TAPS members, leave comments and feedback, participate in polls, read up on Alcatraz history and more!

Then, at 11pm, the show continues online with an exclusive post-broadcast streaming event, “Ghost Hunters Alcatraz Live Extra,” also hosted by Josh Gates.  This 15-minute extension of the live episode will feature a Q&A panel with Jason, Grant and the rest of the TAPS team answering viewer-submitted questions from Syfy.com.

'Ghost Hunters' to celebrate 100th ep with live March event

Looks like Jason, Grant and the TAPS team will be celebrating their hundredth in style. Syfy sent a late Wednesday afternoon announcement that Ghost Hunters will be returning March 3, 9 p.m., with a sixth season kickoff at Alcatraz prison which will also be the show's milestone episode.

The investigation, which is being billed as "epic," is the show's biggest case so far, and will feature the Ghost Hunters International members Barry FitzGerald and Dustin Pari.

According to Syfy, the Alcatraz case will be presented on within a live, 2-hour interactive fan event hosted by Destination Truth’s Josh Gates. Gates will then return on Wednesday, March 17 with a St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun hunt in Ireland for his season premiere. Truth will also feature guest investigator Kris Williams from GH.
